Joe Cordill, president of Cordill Propane Service in Louisiana and former chairman of the National Propane Gas Association, brought that message to Washington, D.C., on May 1 and stated the industry's case to members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

Portland Press Herald
It's been less than a year since a runaway oil train derailed in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, causing a fire that killed 47 people, but that hasn't stopped the new owner of the same railroad from announcing plans to resume oil shipments to New Brunswick — after passing through Lac-Megantic and Maine — as soon as next year.

Oil train protesters seek 'competing harms' defense
Lewiston-Auburn Sun Journal
A man and woman arrested last summer for sitting on railroad tracks said in court they intended to stop a train carrying dangerous crude oil. Jessie Dowling of Unity and Douglas Bowen Jr. of Porter testified in a packed Androscoggin County Superior Court room during a pretrial hearing that they considered the act of criminal trespass to be of lesser harm than allowing a train hauling explosive cargo to pass through an urban area.

Portland panel recommends city council adopt 5 cent bag fee
Portland Press Herald
A proposal to charge Portland shoppers 5 cents for disposable plastic or paper bags took a step forward after a committee voted to send the bag fee to the full City Council. Members of Portland's Transportation, Sustainability and Energy Committee voted 3-1 to endorse an anti-litter proposal that would require retailers to collect 5 cents for every single-use plastic or paper bag that consumers use. The fee would apply at stores where food — including milk, bread, soda and snacks — constitutes at least 2 percent of gross sales but would not apply to dry cleaners, restaurants and farmers markets.

Foam ban, bag fees going back to Portland City Council
The Forecaster
Proposals to ban polystyrene foam containers and cups, and to place a fee on paper and plastic shopping bags, will return to the full City Council for first readings on June 2. The amendments to Chapter 12 of the city code were last considered in September 2013, but were returned to the Transportation, Sustainability and Energy Committee for more discussion. Councilor Ed Suslovic, chairman of the Green Packaging Working Group, which initially suggested the ordinance changes, said he is pleased the full council discussion will be renewed.
