In order to help everyone understand the dynamics at play concerning supply and pricing in the wake of Harvey, MEMA President Jamie Py collected critical information from various sources and put the info in a short understandable document. Many people who have no understanding of the industry at times make great claims about price gouging and collusion. While we don’t expect everyone to understand how the motor fuels and heating fuels business works, we at least want them to understand the market enough to know that the local retailer does not control the wholesale prices and is not colluding with his or her competitor to gouge the Maine consumer.

The Omnibus Energy Bill of 2013 was the most sweeping single piece of energy legislation so far in Gov. Paul LePage’s tenure, but lawmakers have passed a range of other bills to change the course of Maine’s energy policy in that time.
Much of the time, however, has been defined by actions not taken and deferred decisions on matters such as how to compensate small electric generators, how to let new technologies compete with utility proposals for new power lines and in what circumstances, if any, a utility’s sister company can control electric generation within their service territory.

A federal judge has ruled against a new federal overtime regulation handed down by the Obama administration.
The rule would have nearly doubled current salary threshold from its current $23,360 to $47,476, under which virtually all workers will be eligible for mandatory time-and-a-half overtime pay. This change would make nearly 5 million currently exempt employees eligible nationwide.

Making lumber is a bit like peeling a banana. The peels, in this case 16-foot lengths of bark-clad hemlock, are stacked beside a small sawmill here at Treeline Inc., a diversified forestry operation on the access road to Lincoln.
But that waste wood has value. Last fall, Treeline could turn the slabs into chips and truck them an easy 17 miles along the Penobscot River to feed a biomass power plant in West Enfield. Maine lawmakers had recently approved a $13.4 million taxpayer subsidy that allowed a new owner to restart the unprofitable facility.

Oil rose to a three-week high as key refineries and pipelines restarted from shutdowns forced by Hurricane Harvey, reviving crude demand in the heart of the U.S. energy sector.

Although U.S. Gulf Coast refiners are working to restore operations to normal, traders are also watching the approach of another Atlantic hurricane, Irma. Motiva Enterprises LLC said its Port Arthur Refinery in Texas, the largest in the U.S., will return to 40 percent production by the end of the weekend.
