This year’s Convenience Store News Top Wholesalers report asked the c-store industry’s distributor community to share the top challenges impacting their business today. At the top of the list: increased government regulation, cited by almost one-third of respondents.
Also making their list is increased retailer consolidation, which was selected by 18.8 percent of respondents, followed by competition from other full-line wholesalers at 12.5 percent.

Convenience Store News teamed up with Glanbia Performance Nutrition to present awards to this year's Top 20 Growth Chains at the 2017 NACS Show, held in Chicago in October.
The annual Top 20 Growth Chains ranking, now in its sixth year, is based on store count figures provided by TDLinx, a service of Nielsen. Overall, the 2017 CSNews Top 20 Growth Chains added a net 1,396 stores to their portfolios between January 2016 and January 2017, equating to a 5.9-percent increase for the year.

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals on Oct. 27 halted implementation of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) first ever regulation for truck trailers.
In a brief order, the court wrote that the “Petitioner has satisfied the stringent requirements for a stay pending court review.” The judges have not yet scheduled oral arguments.

Plans to fully open the Atlantic Bridge pipeline project next month and send lower-cost gas from Pennsylvania north have been stalled by ongoing opposition to building a large compressor station in Weymouth, Massachusetts.

The driver shortage surged to the top of the American Transportation Research Institute’s 2017 critical industry issues report released Sunday at the American Trucking Associations Management Conference and Exhibition.
It was the first time since 2006 that the driver shortage wound up as the top issue. ATRI opened the survey to all trucking stakeholders, with 1,557 responding from the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

US petroleum product demand averaged more than 20.2 million b/d in September, 2.4 percent more than a year earlier and the highest level for the month since 2007, the American Petroleum Institute reported.
Deliveries, which API uses to measure demand, rose 2.1 percent year-to-year to an average of 20.4 million b/d during this year’s third quarter, and climbed 1.2 percent in the first nine months to an average of 19.9 million b/d from the comparable 2016 period, API said in its latest monthly statistical report.

For the second time in as many years, southern New England's ambitious renewable energy goals are driving a slew of proposals from wind, solar and hydropower projects — many of them with ties to Maine.
This time it's Massachusetts that put out an RFP on March 31 seeking bids for approximately 1,200 megawatts of clean energy. Almost 50 bids were submitted, with at least 14 involving projects located in or passing through Maine.

Tankers carrying record levels of crude are leaving in droves from Texas and Louisiana ports, and more growth in the fledgling U.S. oil export market may before long test the limits of infrastructure like pipelines, dock space and ship traffic.
U.S. crude exports have boomed since the decades-old ban was lifted less than two years ago, with shipments recently hitting a record of 2 million barrels a day. But shippers and traders fear the rising trend is not sustainable, and if limits are hit, it could pressure the price of U.S. oil.
