The head of the largest trade association representing long term and post-acute care facilities encouraged the government and providers to work together to improve quality of care in America's skilled nursing care centers. "We need to usher in a new era of collaboration to better serve our nation's seniors and individuals with disabilities," said Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living. "Federal and state surveyors can be a driving force in assisting facilities learn not only where, but how they can better promote person-centered care and access programs and resources that will help them on their quality journey."

The assisted living community is now very established and provides valuable housing and services options to about 750,000 seniors across the nation, including about 140,000 receiving assistance from Medicaid, writes David Kyllo, executive director for National Center for Assisted Living. Life expectancy rates for men in Marin County, Calif., are 81.6 years, and for women 85.1 years. These life expectancy numbers are contrasted with the lowest in the US, which is in Quitman and Tunica counties in Mississippi at only 66.1 years for men.
