Medicare should reimburse for medical nutrition therapy — or consultations with a registered dietician — to prevent and treat chronic health conditions such as hypertension, obesity, cancer and renal disease. That's the position advanced in a new request submitted to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Officials from the Academy contend that most chronic health conditions can be controlled or treated with MNT.

Created by the Affordable Care Act, the new Independence at Home Demonstration greatly expands the scope of in-home services Medicare beneficiaries can receive.

Alberta, Canada's seniors minister George VanderBurg announced that the province has committed $48.2 million to help build 511 new affordable supportive living and 30 long-term care spaces. The critics say the province is reluctant to act on the most pressing issue — seniors occupying hospital beds due to a lack of long-term care beds in the province.
