Announcing the launch of the Hilton Worldwide Teacher Treks Program 2014 for K-12 teachers! The Hilton Worldwide Teacher Treks Program is meant to bring people together and foster greater understanding between the U.S. and other countries. The Institute of International Education administers the Hilton Worldwide Teacher Treks Program on behalf of Hilton Worldwide. For the 2014 year of the program, teachers will be asked to choose one of the following two tracks as a focus for their program: Teach Abroad Grant or Travel Grant.

Minnesota surge in bilingual students calling for teaching shift

Spanish teacher Javier Blazquez was tired of seeing Hispanic students' bilingual abilities languish, so he found a way to challenge them. The Burnsville High School instructor created his Spanish-for-native-speakers class for those students who grew up speaking the language at home with the aim of improving their writing and grammar skills. "All these kids were taking Spanish I or Spanish II, and it is such a waste for them to spend time on things like vocabulary they already know," Blazquez said. "What I'm trying to get for them is the ability to read and write Spanish well because it will help them in their future careers." His class is the latest example of how educators across Minnesota are trying to better serve growing diverse student populations.

Issues in assessing ESL students

Testing styles in students' home countries are different than those in the U.S., and this is something ESL teachers should take into account when preparing assessments. Often the curriculum overseas will focus on many different subjects; material is usually learned by rote memorization. Students may not be familiar with multiple-choice tests or essay tests that include analysis and synthesis. Oral exams — common in some courses — may present a challenge to both students and instructors.

English language learners, Hispanic students catching up to peers

English language learners and Hispanic students don't yet graduate from St. Vrain Valley School District schools at the same rate as their white counterparts, but district officials believe they are on the right track to correct that. The Board of Education on Wednesday approved the district's unified improvement plan, which will be submitted to the Colorado Department of Education as part of the state's accreditation process. The plan, like the district performance frameworks, looks at the district's academic achievement, academic growth, gaps in growth among different groups of students and postsecondary and workforce readiness — including graduation rates.

Dual-language programs in schools gain following

Working on a math assignment, the 6-year-old girl placed Popsicle stick after Popsicle stick in a horizontal line on the table. "Uno, dos, tres," she counted, all the way to 10. Next, the kindergartner, Isabelle Kao, plotted 15 dominoes. "Cual es más largo?" (which is longer?) her teacher, Graciela Martinez, asked. She gave the girl a hint, extending her arms wide. Isabelle pointed correctly to the longer line — the sticks. Martinez's class at Mark Twain Elementary in southwest Houston is one of a growing number of two-way dual-language classrooms, where native English speakers like Isabelle and native Spanish speakers learn together.

Dyslexia and the English learner dilemma

The American educational system has a difficult time understanding dyslexia and an even harder time identifying children with dyslexia in order to provide the correct intervention for students who are native English speakers. When a school has the added challenge of identifying struggling English language learners, the task becomes an even more complicated process, and often, these kids are completely missed. But that does not have to be the case. Children who are learning English are just as likely to have dyslexia as their native-English-speaking counterparts, and there is a way to identify dyslexia in these children. The difference is that dyslexia might appear in the native language quite as vividly as it will when they attempt to learn English.

Mandatory ELL training gets mixed marks

When 61 percent of Massachusetts voters in 2002 elected to have all students learn core subjects in English, the new law immediately changed bilingual education across the state. The landmark vote abolished the traditional bilingual model of education, whereby students were slowly acclimated to their new language, and fully immersed them in English, limiting exposure to their native tongue. Theresa Castagnetti, an English language learner teacher at the McGlynn Elementary School in Medford, was one of thousands across the state suddenly presented with a group of students who weren't ready for the new system.

Galt, Calif., schools get grant for English language learners

The Galt Joint Union Elementary School District in California has received notification of a three-year total grant award for $599,978 from the Central Valley Foundation. The Bright Future for Galt English Learners project places an emphasis on the unique learning needs of every English-language learner through three focus areas: personalized learning approaches; multi-year training for all teachers and administrators; and English language development coaching.
