NAMIC remembers Stuart Scott
NAMIC
It is with great sadness that NAMIC extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of ESPN anchor Stuart Scott. A diversity champion and friend of NAMIC, Stuart's innovative brand of sports reporting helped to pave the way for other media personalities of color. Stuart died on Jan. 4 at the age of 49.

Oprah's agent launches multicultural media firm

The man responsible for brokering deals for Oprah Winfrey and film mogul Tyler Perry has launched his own media firm catering to multicultural audiences. With an unspecified "eight figures" in funding, Hollywood agent Charles King is leaving his longtime firm, William Morris Endeavor, to launch Los Angeles-based media holding company MACRO, which will develop and distribute feature films, television series and digital content targeting African-American, Latino and multicultural markets, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lee Daniels loved Danny Strong's pitch — "King Lear" meets "The Godfather," set in the world of hip-hop — but he had one fairly significant tweak. "Let's do it for television," he recalls telling his collaborator. Daniels still was reeling from the grueling path that their "Lee Daniels' The Butler" took to get to screen, and, he added, "It'd be nice to make some money."

Broadcom eyes cable broadband, OTT opportunity in India

Even as it was making a splash with a DOCSIS 3.1 announcement at CES, chipmaker Broadcom laid out plans to jump feet first into opportunities within the cable broadband and OTT space in India. Broadcom India managing director Rajiv Kapur referenced the chipmaker's role in OTT through set-top boxes in a story carried by Indian Television.

Intel initiative to encourage diversity in technology is backed with $300 million fund

Intel Corporation has announced a broad, new Diversity in Technology initiative, which includes a $300 million investment to encourage more diversity at Intel and within the technology industry at large. Brian Krzanich, Intel CEO, who made the announcement, acknowledged a recent confluence of events related to under-represented minorities and women, including meetings with Rev. Jesse Jackson of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

The Cuban evolution: Caribbean marketers need to get ready

When President Barack Obama recently announced steps to significantly thaw the relationship between the United States and Cuba, it served as the latest and loudest wake-up call that tourism in the Caribbean region could soon be having a dramatic shift. While it's always been felt that the U.S. embargo would someday be lifted and borders reopened, the announcement seemed to catch the Caribbean and travel community by surprise. And while there are significant legislative hurdles to overcome before U.S. citizens can travel as freely as they do in other Caribbean islands, that day is more clearly in sight.

While the actual timeline might take years rather than months to complete, anyone involved in marketing the Caribbean would be wise to immediately embrace the inevitability and ensure that their marketing and product plans and activities are fully accounting for Cuba's eventual impact on the U.S. market.

Ford launches biggest ever truck ad campaign with large

As the Ford 2015 F-150 truck is coming out the automaker has announced its arrival with Ford's most comprehensive truck marketing campaign ever across a variety of platforms. The campaign focuses mainly on the new F-150's features including the light-weight aluminum body and 11 class-exclusive innovations, such as its 360-degree camera, LED lights and remote tailgate release. The campaign launched last week with television commercials during the first-ever college football playoff for NCAA Division I teams.
