Oscar spotlight draws attention to industry diversity issue
The Associated Press via WCPO-TV
It was a year ago that Lupita Nyong'o, shortly before winning the Academy Award for best supporting actress, gave a speech about what she called "dark beauty." The Mexican-born, Kenyan-raised actress was a central part last year to an Academy Awards flush with faces uncommon to the Oscar podium. There was Ellen DeGeneres, a proud lesbian, hosting. There was the first Latino, Alfonso Cuaron, winning best director. There was the black filmmaker Steve McQueen hopping for joy after his "12 Years a Slave" won best picture. What a difference a year makes.

Building an 'Empire': How Fox's hip-hop drama broke a 23-year-old
ratings record

The Guardian
In 1992, the top sitcom was "Roseanne," the Washingon Redskins won the Super Bowl and it was the last time that a new show rose in the ratings each episode for the first five weeks it aired. "Empire," Fox's Shakespearean-flavored hip-hop drama, beat that record last Wednesday. The crazy thing is that Nielsen, the company that tracks the ratings, changed their system in 1991, so the record might go back even further.

Twitter chat: Can a sitcom challenge Asian-American stereotypes?
PBS NewsHour
PBS NewsHour Weekend recently reported on the new ABC sitcom "Fresh Off the Boat," based on the memoir of celebrity chef Eddie Huang. When the show premiered earlier this month, it was the first time in more than 20 years that a sitcom centered around an Asian-American family. According to a Nielson report, Asians are the fastest growing group in the U.S., having grown 58 percent from 2000 to 2013. Why did it take so long for a network to air a television show focused on this growing demographic? Can a sitcom portray Asian-Americans while avoiding stereotypes? Will greater diversity in TV lineups lead to increased diversity across the media industry?
