NBC affiliates pumped for 'Battle of the Jimmys'

The NBC affiliate community greeted NBC's official announcement on its "Tonight Show" succession plans with good feelings for both the outgoing and incoming hosts. Current one Jay Leno has always been popular with affiliates — meeting many local managers face to face, and consistently delivering strong late-night ratings. But many affiliates believe his successor, Jimmy Fallon, can build on Leno's body of work — and fend off a mounting challenge from "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on ABC.

NCAA March Madness Live generates record 45 million live streams
March Madness has continued to manifest itself in record numbers digitally and on mobile devices during the 2013 tournament to date. Managed by Turner Sports, NCAA March Madness Live generated 45 million live video streams across online and mobile platforms (tablets and smartphones) through March 31, a 158 percent surge from the corresponding span in 2012.
Weather Channel announces 5 new series

The Weather Channel is planning for 2013-14 to be a season of transformation for the network, which will include 20 primetime series, up from eight in 2012. Network president David Clark detailed five of those new series at Weather Channel's upfront presentation.
Fox Soccer Channel to shut down
Fox Soccer, the only U.S. channel dedicated exclusively to broadcasting soccer matches from around the world, has announced that it will shut down and be replaced by a new youth entertainment network called FXX. Games from major tournaments, such as the UEFA Champions League, will be broadcast on a new, general sports channel called Fox Sports 1.

Karen Finney joins Melissa Harris-Perry for MSNBC weekend lineup
Though some media observers doubted it would happen, MSNBC has selected Karen Finney as the host for a new afternoon program airing weekends from 4-5 p.m., reports MSNBC.com. Finney is the latest move in a shuffle that includes Ed Schultz moving to weekends as MSNBC ramps up their news coverage, and Chris Hayes taking over his daily prime-time slot.
CNN Latino continues to expand in key markets
CNN Latino, the Spanish-language programming block custom made for the U.S. Hispanic market, is expanding to New York, Orlando, Tampa and Phoenix, it was announced recently by Cynthia Hudson, senior vice president and general manager of CNN en Español and Hispanic Strategy for CNN/U.S. With the addition of these four new markets to its existing presence in Los Angeles, CNN Latino programming will now be available in markets that represent about a quarter of U.S. Hispanic Households.

The syndicated LEAP African-American Content Alignment Study, conducted by NewMediaMetrics, will quantify the emotional attachment of more than 3,000 African Americans aged 13-64 to more than 350 consumer brands and 400 media properties across 14 platforms — including TV, Internet, print, mobile, social and out-of-home, according to the company.
Deadline extended to April 9 for 2013 NAMIC Next Generation Leaders
NAMIC has announced its call for nominations for the 2013 Next Generation Leaders Awards. Honoring emerging executives for their professional achievements, as well as their efforts in fostering multi-ethnic diversity and inclusion, the Next Generation Leaders Awards will be presented during the NAMIC Annual Awards Breakfast. Business leaders age 45 and under are eligible for nomination. Awards are presented in four categories: Cable MSO, Cable Programmer, Technology Company or Discipline and Creative Discipline. The nominations deadline has been extended to April 9.

Multichannel News has announced the members of the 2013 class of "40 Under 40." "40 Under 40" is a list selected anew each year by the editors of Multichannel News and published annually since 2006. It is intended to spotlight individuals under the age of 40 who are making a mark in diverse fields related to cable television — programming, operations, marketing, supporting vendors and engineering, among them.
