50 years on, the overachiever stereotype is still hurting Asian-Americans
Quartz
As the cigarette smoke clears across the screen of the "A-Town Boyz" movie trailer, we see that Asian-American men are the ones holding the guns. Not Korean, Chinese or Vietnamese men in subtitled gangster films that make the international film festival rounds, but Asian-American men in a documentary set in Atlanta. What happened to the American dream for this so-called model minority? This seems to be the question this forthcoming film’s executive producer Spike Lee and director Eunice Lau hope we will ask.

Eddie Huang blasts 'Fresh off the Boat'; defines it as 'an artificial representation of Asian-American lives'
Salon
Chef Eddie Huang, whose memoir "Fresh Off the Boat" served as inspiration for the ABC sitcom of the same name, criticized the successful show on Twitter last night. While Huang acknowledged that representations of diversity on screen are essential, he criticized the show for neutering his story and erasing the violence that defined his upbringing in favor of a more sanitized network TV take.

This is what it's like to be an actor of color during TV's 'diversity push'
Slate
Last month, Nellie Andreeva wrote a particularly ill-advised piece for Deadline lamenting the sudden "uptick in ethnic casting." In it, Andreeva referred to one anonymous talent agent who expressed relief at finally being able to pitch any actor who may seem right for the role, rather than having to ask casting directors ahead of time "if they would possibly consider an ethnic actor for a part, knowing they would most likely be rejected."

Andreeva's article implied that there is currently an (over)abundance of work for non-white actors in television. Sure, there has certainly been an increase in racial diversity on major network shows since the 2000s. But what does that "diversity" really look like for those who aren't already established stars like Viola Davis and John Leguizamo?

A tale of 2 agencies Tackling multicultural market and more
Advertising Age
Deutsch is building a Hispanic unit called DLAtino in Los Angeles by poaching a partner and an exec creative director from independent Hispanic shop Grupo Gallegos. Before the move a few months ago, Montse Barrena and Juan Pablo Oubiña, born in Spain and Argentina respectively, had only worked at U.S. Hispanic ad agencies. At their former agency across town, John Gallegos is going in a very different direction. His recent hires include non-Hispanics Chief Creative Officer Marty Orzio and Chief Marketing Officer Jennifer Mull, as well as a British group account director, Rachel Gilmour, who joined from BBH London. Before Grupo Gallegos, they had only worked at general-market agencies.

This tale of two agencies highlights a move many shops are making to thrive — or even survive — in a fast-changing market. Today's growing population of influential, multicultural Americans are too big for general-market agencies to ignore, and fewer are the Spanish-dominant immigrants who were once Hispanic agencies' main targets.
