African-American's buying power projected to be $1.1 trillion by 2015
Black Enterprise
There are 43 million African-Americans in the United States, 13.7 percent of the total population, the second largest racial minority in the country. The median age is 32 and 47 percent are under 35 years of age. Even with these impressive numbers and buying power most mainstream advertisers are not inclusive, do not include African-Americans in media and marketing plans and have underestimated the market size. The Nielsen Company study entitled “African-American Consumers: Still Vital, Still Growing,” which was commissioned by the National Newspaper Publishers Association, shows the underrepresented potential and spending power of the African-American community.

Asian-American groups at odds over net neutrality debate
NBC News
Despite agreement on the importance of the internet for the Asian-American community, some Asian-American civil rights groups now find themselves at odds over which side to support in the net neutrality debate. The National Minority Organizations raised eyebrows recently by submitting comments to the Federal Communications Commission against net neutrality, and in favor of deregulating Internet Service Providers. But some Asian-American groups, like 18MillionRising and Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC), are arguing that a policy of net neutrality is central to their community - which boasts some of the highest internet usage in America, a vibrant range of independent content creators, and is consistently contending with a lack of culturally and linguistically relevant content.

What are you missing in sci-fi/fantasy films? Diversity
Northwest Asian Weekly
Many moviegoers will be enjoying their share of summer movies, but according to a recent study, they will be missing something. Diversity. The lack of people of color and women in science fiction and fantasy are especially stunning. As of 2014, based on the top 100 domestic sci-fi and fantasy movies, there are not that many movies involving people of color. According to the study, only 8 percent of the films have a person of color as the lead protagonist, with Will Smith in six of those films and a cartoon character, Aladdin, in another. Only 14 percent of the movies had a lead female character.

Tim Cook is 'not satisfied' with Apple workforce diversity
Reuters via The Huffington Post
Apple Inc. released a report on employee diversity, and its numbers are similar to those of other Silicon Valley companies, prompting Chief Executive Tim Cook to say there is still work to be done. The employee survey comes on the heels of recent reports from technology companies Google Inc. and Twitter Inc., but it is unique in one significant way. It alone is accompanied by letter from a company CEO, in which Cook stresses the company's commitment to being "innovative in advancing diversity."

Race and ratings: VH1's latest launches show what's working - and what's not
The Hollywood Reporter
It is not a bad time to be VH1. Thanks to reality franchises Love & Hip Hop and Basketball Wives, the Viacom network is up 20 percent in primetime among adults 18-49 in 2014 — the biggest rise among the top 25 basic cable nets. But three lackluster launches in July ("LeAnn & Eddie," "Candidly Nicole" and "Dating Naked") illustrate that VH1 faces an uphill battle to extend the success of shows starring African-Americans (and with primarily black viewers) to those starring white celebrities.
