API announces 2013 Transformation Tour dates

Q3 online ad revenues rise to new record

Advertisers appear to be shifting their spending from other media to online outlets, resulting in a record $9.26 billion quarter for the segment. "This uptick goes beyond a significant year-over-year increase at 18 percent," said David Silverman, a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers. What periodicals lack in volume, they make up for in influence. People want to receive periodicals, so they check their mail and read the spam. If magazines die, then people may not even bother to check their mailboxes. Internally, the Postal Service refers to periodicals as "the anchor in the mailbox." Clearly, the Postal Service has an interest in making sure that periodicals stay in business and continue to sell print subscriptions. More

New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson tells her staff that the paper's "Snow Fall" interactive feature received around 2.9 million visits for more than 3.5 million page views. "At its peak, as many as 22,000 users visited Snow Fall at any given time," she writes. "Strikingly, a quarter to a third of them were new visitors to nytimes.com. Rarely have we been able to create a compelling destination outside the home page that was so engaging in such a short period of time on the Web." More

It feels like a throwback to an earlier era at the Orange County Register, where a first-time newspaper owner is defying conventional wisdom by spending heavily to expand the printed edition and playing down digital formats. Aaron Kushner added about 75 journalists and, with 25 more coming, will have expanded the newsroom by half since his investment group bought the nation's 20th-largest newspaper by circulation in July.
