Gavel passes to Contreras as new NAA chairman
Mark G. Contreras, senior vice president/newspapers of The E.W. Scripps Company, has been elected to serve as NAA's next chairman. The gavel was passed to Contreras from last year's chairman, George B. Irish, vice president and eastern director of the Hearst Foundations, during mediaXchange. Irish will continue to serve on the NAA Board of Directors as immediate past chairperson. MORE

Consumer confidence up in April from year low

U.S. consumer confidence rebounded in April after hitting in March its lowest level in a year, boosted by stock market gains and modest job market improvement, a research group said. Investor's Business Daily and TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence said their IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism Index rose to 48.4 in April from March's reading of 45.4. Readings above 50 indicate optimism, while those below 50 point to pessimism. More

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has joined the debate surrounding paid-for newspaper content on the internet by suggesting readers were unlikely to pay for access to basic news. Brown said that readers were likely, and should be encouraged, to pay for certain things online but that there was a "whole sort of element of communication" that should remain free. More

Only 22 magazines folded during the first period of 2010, according to the latest report from online magazine database MediaFinder.com. That's a dramatic reduction in the number of publications that died off during the same period last year: 95. It's good news for an industry that has experienced a severe contraction since before the onset of the economic recession. More
