Industry and policymakers shift focus to mobile privacy

Mobile is the new frontier in newspapers' efforts to monetize digital content and deliver news and information when and where readers want it. As newspapers invest and innovate in the mobile space, they also should think about consumer privacy. Members of Congress have introduced mobile privacy legislation, and industry initiatives are under way to provide companies with guidance on mobile privacy without unduly interfering with the quality of mobile products and services or the ability to make money from them. NAA encourages newspapers to weave in privacy principles when developing mobile applications and mobile websites. More

Stipple introduces self-serve ad platform for publishers, brands

Stipple, a technology that allows you to tag people in images no matter where they reside on the Web, has launched a platform that serves as an "Adsense for Images." Stipple is giving brands a way to identify their photos and create advertising campaigns around the products they want to sell inside the photos. When people mouse-over products in photos, the image reveals the brand, pricing information, and a link to purchase. More

Sears posts wider loss, shuts 29 stores

Sears Holdings Corp., parent company of Sears department stores and Kmart discount chain, recently reported a bigger-than-expected second-quarter loss, after weakening demand led to increased promotions and clearance sales. To cut costs amid lower demand, Sears shut 29 stores, converted 14 Sears Grand stores to Kmart and shut seven product repair center locations. It also cut about 250 support jobs on top of positions reduced from the closings and store conversions. More

Apple Inc. is working with component suppliers and its assembler in Asia for the trial production of its next generation iPad. It is expected to feature a high-resolution display and Apple’s suppliers have already shipped small quantities of components for the sampling of the iPad 3. Twitter's recently launched "User Galleries" feature aggregates the last 100 pictures uploaded by a user via tweet and displays them in chronological order. The photo album-like gallery will be linked from each user's profile page and includes photos directly shared through Twitter, as well as those from third-party services. It will be a site for news, data and conversation about New York City schools, and will feature aggregated content from the local school-info resources GothamSchools and Inside Schools.
