Virtual schools are multiplying, but some question their educational value The Washington Post Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
A Virginia company leading a national movement to replace classrooms with computers — in which children as young as 5 can learn at home at taxpayer expense — is facing a backlash from critics who are questioning its funding, quality and oversight. K12 Inc. of Herndon has become the country's largest provider of full-time public virtual schools, upending the traditional American notion that learning occurs in a schoolhouse where students share the experience. In K12's virtual schools, learning is largely solitary, with lessons delivered online to a child who progresses at her own pace. Traveler complaints against the U.S. Transportation Security Administration are near an all-time low, even as House transportation committee Chairman John Mica derides the agency as resembling the Marx Brothers comedy team. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood writes, "While we have made great strides over the last 30 years, drunk driving is still the deadliest epidemic on our roads, killing 11,000 people each year. One of DOT's key partners in this fight has been Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and earlier this month I was pleased to join National President Jan Withers and other MADD officials to celebrate the fifth anniversary of their Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving." In short, students on school buses do whatever their smart phones are programmed to let them do, even though it's against the rules. Anti-bully bill debate heats up in Michigan legislature The Detroit News Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
After more than 10 years of debate in the Legislature, Michigan is close to having a school anti-bullying bill. But some see it as only a partial victory. It's been a long and bitter battle for Kevin Epling of East Lansing, who has campaigned for an anti-bullying law since his 14-year-old son, Matt, took his own life after a bullying incident by high school upperclassmen in 2002. "We're losing kids," a frustrated Epling said earlier this month. "Every year I've been doing this, I'm introduced to a new family who's lost a kid." More High-tech clicks but only for some schools The Kansas City Star Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
When even the most innovative classrooms lag behind what's possible, it's almost unfair asking the school tech guy: What's next? The truth is that the possibilities in education are bounding ahead daily. And here's the more alarming truth: American schools aren't keeping up.
