Not driven to drive
The Dallas Morning News
Consider Jake Gau, a multimodal millennial. On chillier mornings, the 25-year-old rehabilitation aide hops on the No. 30 bus in northeast Minneapolis bound for his job at the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in Golden Valley. On warmer days, he pedals his mountain bike westward to work. Noticeably missing from his array of transportation options — a car. And that’s just fine with him.

'Sweet' self-healing corrosion materials are in field testing
By Alan Kelsky
Middle-aged men who attempt skateboarding for the first time are likely to come away from that experience with lots of abrasions and cuts. But, other than cleansing the wounds, they will heal if left alone. Imagine the engineering possibilities if materials such as steel and concrete had the same self-healing properties of human skin. Recent research at Clemson University has found ways to allow inanimate objects to do just that.

California's bullet train: We owe it to our grandchildren to get this right
Los Angeles Times (opinion)
Trains are good for the environment, they are fun to ride and you zip right past all the planet-killing motorists sitting in traffic. But urban planners often fall short when it comes to making train systems as useful as they could be, which sets the stage for critics who call every idea that doesn't involve more cars a boondoggle.

Residents uneasy as projects expected to slash through rural Grimes County, Texas
Houston Chronicle
The grass is a little dry, but there is a serene beauty to the spot Nancy Perry hopes to call home, and she'll fight to keep it that way. The 10-acre tract where Perry plans to build a house is close enough to Texas 90 that she can get downtown to her real estate office in a few minutes, but it's far enough outside Navasota to feel rural. Navasota, about 10 miles from the outskirts of College Station, is a far cry from the big city, but metro demands are worrying a lot of folks in Grimes County.
