Spa industry sees slight decline in 2Q
Skin Inc.
After seeing a decrease in the first quarter of 2014, the Professional Beauty Association's Salon/Spa Performance Index continued to decline slightly by 0.2 percent in the second quarter 2014; its lowest level since 2012. QUOTABLE

"NCEA has been an invaluable resource for me in furthering my education and obtaining an advanced credential. Because of the educational value afforded me through the NCEA Certification program, I was able to use that to receive my Master Esthetics License in both Washington, D.C., and Virginia. Susanne Warfield graciously advocated on my behalf, at times guiding me through the certification and licensing processes over the past few years. Her dedication to the esthetics industry is commendable and her loyalty to higher standards in esthetics education makes NCEA credentialing well worth it."

BUSINESS BRIEFS

Proactive management: A formula for success
By Harry J. Friedman
"Sales are down from last year." "The whole industry is down." "It's tough right now." "We're just trying to minimize our losses." In both good times and in bad, you've probably heard these comments if you haven't said them yourself. But there are always companies that are making their goals and many that are even exceeding them. So how is it possible for some companies to prosper while so many others are struggling to keep their doors open? The difference lies in upper management's style: reactive or proactive.

Cross-training: Your best defense against indispensable employees
Forbes
Imagine you're part of a dangerous military combat operation. Suddenly, one of your team members with a mission-critical skill is injured or killed. Do you just pack up and go home? Of course not. In the military, cross-training is a part of everyday life. Our armed forces understand that duplication in the human system is one of the best ways to mitigate risk and ensure success. While your company's mission may not be life or death, it can sometimes feel like it. Regardless of your industry, today's businesses can't risk failing because they lose a key player at a critical juncture. It's essential to cross-train your employees so losing one won't mean the end of your company.

TEACHING TIPS

10 recommendations for improving group work
Faculty Focus
Many faculty now have students do some graded work in groups. The task may be, for example, preparation of a paper or report, collection and analysis of data, a presentation supported with visuals or creation of a website. Faculty make these assignments with high expectations. They want the groups to produce quality work — better than what the students could do individually — and they want the students to learn how to work productively with others. Sometimes those expectations are realized, but most of the time there is room for improvement — sometimes lots of it. To that end, here is a set of suggestions for improving group projects. A list in the article referenced below provided a starting place for these recommendations.
