The real dirt on face washing
The Wall Street Journal
Washing your face seems pretty simple, yet dermatologists and beauty companies think there's room for improvement. "Easy does it" is the message experts have for consumers, as a new generation of facial cleansers promises mild formulas that won't dry out the skin. Cosmetologist: Research may prompt more people to act earlier to tackle wrinkles
The Harley Medical Group
Wrinkles may be genetic, according to findings of a recent Swedish survey. According to the researchers, signs of age don't just come from damage to our own DNA, but also to the DNA we inherit from our mothers. Leading scientific journal Nature published the findings, which came from an in-depth study into how mitochondria, or the power sources for the cells in the human body, degenerate and set off the body's aging process. As a result, medical professionals may one day gain a better understanding of that process, to enable them to develop more effective anti-aging treatments.

The true origin of Halloween
By John Mosley
Some holidays fall on the same date each year because they commemorate a specific event. Others drift by up to several weeks from year to year. The most familiar example is Easter, which is set as the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. In ancient times, people didn't have nicely printed calendars to refer to, and they used the sky — especially the motions of the sun and moon — to set important dates. Perhaps surprisingly, Halloween is also a date that is determined astronomically.

QUOTABLE

Recently a representative/esthetician noted my expertise and inquired as to my background. She travels all over the country and meets many estheticians with varying knowledge of our field. I told her about my NCEA Certification and how the organization is striving to standardize esthetics across the country. Naturally, I encouraged her to join!

BUSINESS BRIEFS

5 ways to create meaningful customer relationships
American Express OPEN Forum
In many ways, the relationship between a doctor and patient is the same as that of a small business and a customer. "The success of any business depends on creating and maintaining meaningful customer relationships," says Mike Muhney, founder and CEO of VIPorbit Software and co-creator of ACT! software. "When you connect with customers on a personal level and give them the best experience possible, that goes a long way toward securing future business."

Confessions of a miser: Learning to let go
By Bob Fortune
Many say that Benjamin Franklin was the father of thrift in America. He believed industrious hard work combined with frugality helped shape a person's or a business's future. Living within one’s means and applying that savings to a future benefit were recurring themes found in Franklin's popular book, "The Way to Wealth." For the longest time, a calculator was my third partner. In every decision I made, costs were more important than benefits. As I learned over time, this was not always beneficial to our company.
