NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
At this time of year the Association receives a lot questions about whether people should consider wearing a costume to the Monday Night Theme Party sponsored by Stanley LaBounty scheduled for March 25 in the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel. With this year's theme, "Shore Leave in San Diego" presents a great opportunity to don your old military uniforms or rent a sailor suit to really get "in the mood." The Theme party which starts at 7 p.m. PST will feature a World War II era décor, a Andrews Sisters trio and an eight-piece dance band. You don't have to wear a costume. Just come prepared to have a great time, enjoy some terrific food and some fabulous entertainment.

Feds propose recycling scrap metal from LANL, other nuke sites
Albuquerque Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The federal government is drawing opposition from the steel industry and others for its proposal to commercially recycle scrap metal from Los Alamos National Laboratory and other nuclear sites. The Department of Energy recommends that scrap metal exposed on its surface to radiation be recycled if the metal is uncontaminated or if radiation levels are low enough. The department released a draft environmental assessment in December. According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, the proposal includes about 350 metric tons of scrap metal at Los Alamos. The head of a steel producers group said the proposal could risk contamination of food cans, building beams and car parts. More

Association officials noted that construction employment rose for the eighth consecutive month in January, while construction spending in December increased for the ninth month in a row. Both totals were the highest levels in more than three years. More

US keeps building new highways while letting old ones crumble
McClatchy Washington Bureau    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
America's highway system, once a symbol of freedom and mobility envied the world over, is crumbling physically and financially, the potentially disastrous consequence of a politically driven road-building binge. President Barack Obama, state transportation officials, civil engineers, road builders and business groups all say that the country needs to invest trillions of dollars in its infrastructure, yet there's little consensus on how to finance it or what the most pressing needs are. Crisis management planning should be done by all businesses
AGBeat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
You wrote a business plan for the success of your business. Now it's time to write a crisis management plan to bolster your company's response to moments of crisis. It is worth asking the question, "What is considered a crisis?" There are a number of potential ways to answer that, but customize the answer for your business by asking yourself this question: What are the components of my company that make it function smoothly? A crisis is a moment when one of those components ceases to function properly with the potential of harming your company in some significant way. More

Ferrous scrap: Still wanting more
Construction & Demolition Recycling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ferrous scrap recyclers in North America continued to operate in a "steady as she goes" market as the new calendar year started. Domestic mill demand is not booming but is in step with the lagging pace of supply. Export demand has remained consistent, with Turkish mills placing orders on the Atlantic Coast and South Korean buyers being cited as a steady presence by recyclers on the Pacific Coast. Scrap generation offers a few bright spots, depending on the grade and region, although the construction and demolition sectors remain among the most beleaguered segments of the economy. More

Candlestick Park to be demolished within year
Yahoo News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Candlestick Park in San Francisco famously shook for about 15 seconds in 1989, when the Loma Prieta earthquake disrupted Game 3 of the World Series. That didn't kill The 'Stick, but a 30-second implosion will. Plans were announced to blow up the 53-year-old, 69,000-seat stadium once the 49ers finish up their 2013-2014 season and move south to Santa Clara. They're the last tenant at the stadium, left to brave the Candlestick wind all alone when the Giants moved to AT&T Park before the 2000 season. More

The Hill    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Labor unions and safety advocates are applying new pressure on the Obama administration to issue a long-sought worker protection rule that industry groups say will cost billions of dollars to implement. Decades in the making, the proposal to set new limits on workers' exposure to harmful silica has languished since February 2011 at the White House Office of Management and Budget, where officials say it is under review. Man tries to recall fatal Oshkosh, Wis., crane collapse
Green Bay Press Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Martin DeRidder doesn't remember the day he should have died. He doesn't remember the day before it, much of the day before that or the month that followed. The picture has been pieced together for him by coworkers, emergency records, doctors and his girlfriend. But there's one piece missing, and it's the one he alone can complete. It will tell him what went wrong on July 5, 2012, in Oshkosh, Wis., when the crane he was operating collapsed, took another man's life and nearly cost him his own. More
