Construction January jobless rate down from year-earlier level

Construction began 2015 with upbeat employment figures, adding 39,000 jobs in January, pushing the industry’s unemployment rate down to 9.8 percent, well below the year-earlier level. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest monthly employment report, released on Feb. 6, showed that construction’s jobless rate last month fell from January 2014’s 12.3 percent but was up from December’s 8.3 percent.

Boston preservationists fight to save century-old building
Next City
A century-old Boston school building is the subject of major debate in the city’s Roxbury neighborhood. The building, which most recently housed Dearborn Middle School, is scheduled for demolition to make way for Boston’s first new school in over a decade. But neighborhood residents and historical preservationists are fighting to save the original structure, which first opened in the 1913-14 school year as the High School of Practical Arts for Girls.

Clarion hotel-casino demolition in Las Vegas complete

After more than 12 hours of demolition work, the Clarion Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is finally a pile of dust. But it didn't come down without a fight. The elevator shaft remained standing until Tuesday afternoon, when demolition crews tore it down with cables and pulleys. All morning, there were snaps and pops as crews put tension on that massive cable working to topple over the remaining eight stories of the elevator shaft. They finally succeeded without the help of a wrecking ball.

Roadblock brings Camden, New Jersey, demolition plan to a halt
WCAU-TV
The plan to raze hundreds of blighted buildings across Camden has hit another roadblock. The contractor who won the job last month has pulled out over the cost of asbestos removal and liability concerns. City government spokesman Vincent Basara told the Courier-Post that National Demolition & Recycling apparently did not understand some of the specifications in the $6.8 million contract. The company's bid was far lower than competitors'.
