NDA to introduce Disaster Response Program at 38th Annual Convention in Las Vegas
NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The National Demolition Association will be introducing the association's new National Disaster Response Program March 7 at the 38th Annual Convention at The Mirage in Las Vegas. This new association initiative is designed to provide the nation with access to demolition companies interested in responding to large natural or man-made disasters. The NDA intends to set-up a national database of member companies available to respond to large events similar to the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and hurricane Katrina. The goal is to be able to identify interested member firms that can provide equipment and manpower in a timely manner.

The NDA intends to set-up an 800 number that disaster response coordinators on the federal and state level can access to alert demolition companies to their needs. The NDA hopes to provide qualified second response capabilities on a national basis for large disasters while assuring prompt payment and limited liability.

NDA past President Tom Robinette of Robinette Demolition, Inc. of Oak Brook Terrace, Ill., his general superintendent and former NDA Safety Committee Chair Jerry Myrick and RDI's emergency response team coordinator will present the new program following NDA President Ray Passeno's State of the Association address March 7 in the Mirage Exhibition Center at the association's 38th Annual Convention. Mr. Robinette, Mr. Myrick and Mr. Stahr designed the NDA's Disaster Site Worker Training & Certification Program developed as part of the association's OSHA alliance.

With demolition, Apple chief makes way for house 2.0
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There may not be an app for it, but Steve Jobs did have a permit. And with that, his epic battle to tear down his own house is finally over. For the better part of the last decade, Mr. Jobs, the co-founder and chief executive of Apple, has been trying to demolish a sprawling, Spanish-style mansion he owns in Woodside, Calif., a tony and techie enclave some 30 miles south of San Francisco. His efforts, however, had been delayed by legal challenges and cries for preservation of the so-called Jackling House, which was built in the 1920s for another successful industrialist: Daniel Jackling, whose money was in copper, not silicon. AGCA via ForConstructionPros.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The prices contractors must pay for many essential construction materials continued to increase in January, even as the amount they charge for completed projects remains flat, according to an analysis of January producer price index figures released by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGCA). When banks won't lend: Alternative sources of financing for construction firms
ForConstructionPros.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If it's true that the construction industry is a key part of the engine that powers the U.S. economy, then it only stands to reason that access to financing serves as the motor oil that keeps all the engine parts in good condition and running smoothly. There are numerous ways to secure financing; methods run from the traditional to the extremely creative. But the one universal challenge that any construction firm faces - at almost any stage of growth - is to find the method that fits its own unique set of goals and circumstances at a particular point in time. Building performance ramp-up possible despite uncertain Congress
GreenerBuildings    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
There has been a whole lot of negative talk about the prospects for energy, climate or other significant legislation coming out of the newly divided Congress, and that is not the best news for the green building industry. However, this does not imply that green building advocates should pack up and go home — in fact, it means quite the contrary. It turns out that a renewed focus on utilizing the legal authority already granted to federal agencies by Congress could reap huge benefits for architects, engineers, builders, developers, manufacturers and others involved in the green building process. Planners back demolition, rebuilding of San Francisco apartments
San Francisco Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
San Francisco's Planning Commission voted to demolish the 1940s design for the car-centric Parkmerced apartments in favor of transforming it to a dense, $1.2 billion transit-first community, which proponents call a model for future development in California. Over a 20-year period, those homes could be replaced with 7,200 units that would bring 14,000 new residents to the 152-acre development. The high-density community would have a school, easy access to transit, and corner stores within walking distance of homes designed to save water and power. More
