Ohio grant program helps remove 14,000 blighted structures
Construction & Demolition Recycling
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine has issued a report detailing the success of the Moving Ohio Forward Demolition Grant program. The report shows that the Ohio attorney general’s program, which concluded at the end of last year, helped remove more than 14,000 abandoned and blighted housing units in the state. "While the number of blighted structures we have removed is an impressive figure, the true success of this program is measured by its visible impact in the towns, on the streets and through the lives it has touched," says DeWine.

How Gary, Indiana, got serious about tackling blight
CityLab
For more than three decades, the vacant Sheraton Hotel loomed over City Hall in Gary, Indiana, a billboard for the city's descent from Steel City glory into postindustrial blight. Once the city's tallest building, it was hailed as "the gateway to the city's future" by former Mayor Richard Hatcher upon its opening in 1971. It went dark just 14 years later. Entering or passing by Gary on the highway, visitors could see straight through the gutted building, its skeleton a rebuke to the neoclassical dome of City Hall right next door.

Demolition permits issued for historic downtown Raleigh, North Carolina warehouse
Triangle Business Journal
The owners of a nearly four-acre block on the south side of downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, have started positioning demolition equipment with plans to tear down the five buildings that make up a former service center for the Greyhound bus lines. But a vocal group of historic preservationists has issued a plea to Raleigh city leaders seeking suspension of the demolition permits that were recently issued to the D.H. Griffin Wrecking Co. until they have a chance to work out another potential deal to rehabilitate and reuse the existing warehouse buildings on the site.

Preservation Chicago names 7 endangered buildings
Chicago Tribune
One of this year's "Chicago 7" buildings deemed threatened by a local preservation group isn't a building at all. Neon signs "throughout the city" made Preservation Chicago's annual list of the city's most endangered structures. The signs, which often become local icons, were "a popular form of advertising from the 1930s to the 1960s," the group notes.
