Performance demands will drive green construction growth

Of all the trends affecting the rise in sustainable construction, none is having a greater impact than the drive for higher building performance. As owners, engineers and builders strive for greater efficiencies, they are turning to green building practices for solutions. To judge by the trade media, you would think everyone is building green. Such is not the case. Although sustainable design and construction has become more mainstream, it still represents only a fraction of the entire industry. That may change drastically in the next three to five years.

Muskegon County, Michigan's planned deconstruction-materials facility a key part in fight against blight

Orlando seeks options as 'Round Building' demolition company leaves the job

Remnants of Orlando, Florida’s "Round Building" will continue to linger near the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, after officials said Tuesday that the company hired to tear it down has defaulted on its contract. The city had initially hoped to demolish the Round Building before the arts center's grand opening, but that came and went as the project suffered repeated delays.

Salvage plans underway for damaged tanker in Houston Ship Channel
KPRC-TV
Plans to salvage the damaged chemical tanker Carla Maersk got underway Wednesday, two days after a collision with another ship in the Houston Ship Channel. The Carla Maersk's port cargo tanks were damaged in the collision with the bulk freighter Conti Peridot and leaked MTBE, which is a fuel additive in gasoline. The Carla Maersk was reportedly carrying 216,000 barrels of MTBE taken on at Texas Petro Chemical Plant, but the Coast Guard is unsure at this time how much chemical leaked.

Scanning old blueprints to preserve architectural past

History doesn’t begin with the brick and mortar of old houses in need of preservation, but with the first lines of an architect drawing the blueprints. Starting March 14, the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County and the Buncombe County Public Library will team up to offer local residents a free opportunity to turn old architectural drawings into digital images.
