NDA names 2014 scholarship recipients

National Demolition Association presented scholarships to seven students at its Annual Convention held in February in Las Vegas. “The students were chosen to receive these scholarships because they have demonstrated a commitment to serving the local community, all while maintaining a high level of academic excellence,” said Michael R. Taylor, CAE, Executive Director of the NDA.

Southern California Chapter to celebrate 25th Silver Anniversary Golf Tournament June 4-5

The Southern California Chapter of the National Demolition Association will be celebrating their 25th Silver Anniversary out at the Pacific Palms Resort in City of Industry, Calif., on June 4-5. This important event will feature a cocktail reception and dinner on Wednesday, June 4, followed by the golf outing on June 5.

Locations set for upcoming NDA Board Meetings
NDA
NDA President Jeff Kroeker — of Kroeker, Inc. in Fresno, Calif. — has announced the dates and locations for the next three Board of Directors meetings in 2014/15. The summer Board Meeting will take place at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Vancouver, B.C., on June 6-7; The fall Board Meeting will take place at the Gettysburg Hotel in historic Gettysburg, Pa., on Sept. 26-27; and the winter Meeting is scheduled for the Sheraton Waikiki in Honolulu on Jan. 9-10, 2015.

Buildings sank when engineers investigated Bertha
KIRO-TV
Documents obtained by KIRO-TV show buildings in Seattle's Pioneer Square briefly settled when crews pumped out groundwater to investigate problems with Bertha. In late December, when problems with the tunnel boring machine left engineers stumped, crews pumped out at least 300,000 gallons of groundwater to prepare for a closer inspection. Previously, state officials told reporters that drawdown caused temporary, minor settlement of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, of between one-tenth of an inch and two-tenths of an inch.

EPA releases green infrastructure planning resource

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released "Greening CSO Plans: Planning and Modeling Green Infrastructure for Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Control" to provide municipalities and sewer authorities with tools to help quantify green infrastructure contributions to a CSO control plan. Communities with combined sewers often view green infrastructure as an attractive way to reduce stormwater flows going into their sewer system, thus helping to reduce capital and operational costs at publicly owned treatment works.
