National Demolition Association Celebrates the Success of Demolition 2015

The National Demolition Association (NDA)’s 42nd Annual Convention and Expo, Demolition 2015, came to a close on Tuesday, March 24 after four days of creating valuable connections within the demolition industry. More than 1,100 attendees and 84 exhibitors gathered in Nashville, Tennessee, to network, learn and celebrate accomplishments in demolition.

NDA underwent major changes in 2014 and the positive response to its first big event, Demolition 2015, has been overwhelming.

Major changes visible at Demolition 2015

More than 1,100 attendees and 84 exhibitors gathered in Nashville, Tennessee, March 21-24, at the Gaylord Opryland Resort for the National Demolition Association’s 42nd annual convention and expo, Demolition 2015. The NDA underwent major changes in management in 2014 and the positive response to its first big event under new direction, Demolition 2015, has been overwhelming, according to the District of Columbia-based organization.

Demolition of Cleveland Public Square continues

The statues of Moses Cleaveland and Tom Johnson are gone from Public Square along with most of the landmarks Northeast Ohioans have grown accustomed to in the historic center of the city. It has been three weeks since construction began on the $32 million renovation designed by nationally known landscape architect James Corner, and two of the four quadrants have been leveled.

Downtown Columbia, Missouri, Shakespeare's Pizza location slated for demolition

For decades, it has stood as a small but iconic building at the corner of Ninth and Elm streets in Columbia, Missouri, and now, developers are gearing up to tear it down. Shakespeare’s downtown location at 225 S. Ninth St. will move around the corner in late May in preparation for the building’s demolition to make way for a multistory structure with Shakespeare’s as the ground-floor tenant.

Detroit Mayor Duggan may have tough time finding blight funds

With federal funding for Detroit's aggressive blight program expected to be exhausted by fall, Mayor Mike Duggan is scouring the Obama administration's agencies in hopes of finding even more to keep the city's abundant stockpile of vacant buildings coming down. He may have his work cut out for him. "I've got three to four months to solve this," he told the Free Press exclusively during a visit last week to Washington.

Another section of Long Island Bridge in Boston comes down

Another section of Boston’s Long Island Bridge was taken down April 1 as the piecemeal demolition continued of the span that once provided access to homeless shelter and addiction treatment programs housed on the island. Workers had already taken down two other sections of the bridge across Boston Harbor, on Feb. 25 and March 22.

Construction spending up 2.1 percent in February, from year-earlier level

Construction spending in February climbed 2.1 percent, year-over-year, but slipped slightly from January's total, the Commerce Department reports. The department’s latest monthly construction report, released on April 1, showed that the value of finished construction projects in February hit an annual rate of $967.2 billion, up 2.1 percent from February 2014’s rate, but down 0.1 percent from January’s level. Rates are seasonally adjusted.

Asbestos at Titusville, Florida, mall delays demolition

Demolition of the former Miracle City Mall along U.S. 1 in Titusville, Florida, has temporarily stopped because of a greater presence of asbestos than was originally thought. Allen Goins, president of Tampa-based AG Development, which is developing the $60 million Titus Landing Shopping Center, a retail and office center on the former Miracle City Mall footprint, estimated the additional asbestos problem will set back the project 30 to 45 days.
