Portland, Oregon's demolition debate lands close to home
The Oregonian
For a little while longer, Addie Benfield and Barbara Pikus of southeast Portland, Oregon, can look out their windows toward the red farmhouse that's stood on their block since 1916. It's not a particularly lovely place, but to them, it beats what's slated to replace it: Two 30-foot-narrow houses, snugged up to within five feet of the property lines on either side, according to plans submitted to the city. Benfield and Pikus have collected signatures from neighbors opposed to the change and they hope they can block the plans, possibly on appeal to the City Council.

Shrink-wrap service keeps mothballed machinery fresh
Engineering News-Record
Climate-controlled storage is not always an option when preserving idled equipment, materials and parts. Because leaving equipment out in the open can cause serious damage and downtime, some companies are investing in military-grade enclosures that keep out light, dirt, moisture and animals for years. "In most cases, we find that clients know how to run a piece of equipment, but they don't know what they need to do to shut it down," says Steve Hanna, CEO of Carrollton, Texas-based Protective Packaging Corp. "They just bring it back to a yard, stack the equipment and walk away from it."

Bill could block demolition of iconic Missouri pizza restaurant, add protections for historic properties
Missourian
In her final council meeting, outgoing Sixth Ward Councilwoman Barbara Hoppe of Columbia, Missouri, figured it was her last shot to protect historic buildings downtown, so she proposed an ordinance that would establish a six-month delay on issuing demolition permits downtown. Hoppe said the moratorium would give the city time to put a stronger historic preservation ordinance in place. The bill would place a potential obstacle in the way of the planned demolition of Shakespeare’s Pizza at Ninth and Elm streets.

Demolition of Fort Hood, Texas, housing built in 1950s begins
Killeen Daily Herald
The sounds of shattering glass and cracking lumber marked the beginning of the end for one of the oldest military housing areas on post April 7. Demolition crews began tearing down Fort Hood’s Walker Village, a collection of 518 residences, most of them one-story duplex homes. Built in 1953 and 1954, the outdated homes were used for decades by enlisted soldiers and their families, said Mack Quinney, the project director with Fort Hood Family Housing, a private company that has a 50-year lease with Fort Hood to run post housing.
