Benefits of NDA Membership Come Alive Through Active Involvement
When my brothers Brian and Nick and I took over as co-owners of Hayden Wrecking in Washington Park, IL, we thought the time was right to get more out of our company's long-time membership in the National Demolition Association (NDA). Our grandfather, William Hayden, founded the business in 1945 after returning home from World War II. Our father, Ron, understood the value of partnering with other professionals in the demolition industry and when the NDA was established in 1973, Hayden Wrecking became a founding member.

How a proper engineering survey can prevent OSHA citations in construction demolition
Demolition Magazine via For Construction Pros
The demolition section of the OSHA standards in Subpart T has accounted for the most cited rule in Subpart T for the last 10 years and accounts for 15 percent of all citations and penalties issued to demolition contractors the agency has inspected. The frequency of citations may indicate many contractors are unfamiliar with the requirement to perform and engineering survey. The engineering survey provides contractors with a tool to plan and prepare for worst-case scenarios. If contractors plan for the worst, they can be well prepared to address hazards, and, in most cases, they will be compliant with OSHA’s requirement for an engineering survey.

The Seattle Times
Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson said it appears to him that Highway 410 overpass contractors didn't follow their own detailed demolition plan, when a long piece of concrete barrier fell and killed a young family in a pickup below. The accident, at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 13, happened at the same time project managers and city staff were in a routine weekly meeting in city offices, to preview upcoming tasks, he said.

Don't let desperation drive your decisions
By Anne Rose
You're short-handed and desperately need to hire another employee, so you hire the first breathing person that mails in a job application. Or maybe your bank account is desperately low and you need a client fast, so you accept the first prospective customer who calls on the phone. We've all been in those situations and know the fear and panic that can set in. But when desperation drives an impetuous decision, it seldom solves your initial problem and usually adds more problems. The wrong person is worse than no person.

The Patriot-News
Two historic homes in downtown Harrisburg have dodged the wrecking ball, for the time being, after the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency agreed to put them up for sale. The finance agency bought the homes last year with plans to demolish them for an expansion of its offices along Front Street. The agency has been trying to expand its landlocked offices since at least 2008. The offices opened in 2004.

It's been six days since the city of Bakersfield tore down the wall and fence at the homeless camp on union avenue known as "tent city." Despite the wall being demolished — there are still people living on the property. "None of us were prepared for what it would look like and the drastic, traumatic effect of that fence coming down that morning," said Christine Lollar.

Stand up to keep falls down
For Construction Pros
Despite legislation, as well as educational programs and safety awareness campaigns on the part of OSHA, construction associations and other concerned parties, the lack of proper fall protection continues to rank first on OSHA's Top 10 Most Frequently Cited Violations. It is also the No. 1 killer of construction workers. In 2013, of the 796 workers killed in construction accidents, 294 were the result of falls.

Demolition began in September, much to the dismay of local historic preservationists who wanted to see the building re-purposed.
