Benefits of NDA Membership Come Alive Through Active Involvement
NDA
When my brothers Brian and Nick and I took over as co-owners of Hayden Wrecking in Washington Park, IL, we thought the time was right to get more out of our company's long-time membership in the National Demolition Association (NDA). Our grandfather, William Hayden, founded the business in 1945 after returning home from World War II. Our father, Ron, understood the value of partnering with other professionals in the demolition industry and when the NDA was established in 1973, Hayden Wrecking became a founding member.

Gentler side of demolition: Deconstructors take houses apart, stick by stick
The Oregonian
In Southeast Portland's Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood, an old house is coming undone. Wooden shingles scream as they're pried away from the house's exterior. Workers wearing protective suits stack the shingles inside rubber garbage cans and haul them to the open dumpster on the street, which is being filled systematically, like a stack of Jenga blocks.

Demolition of Geneva, Illinois' Cetron factory brings back fond memories
Chicago Tribune
The razing of Geneva, Illinois’ old Cetron building has sparked childhood memories from current and former Genevans. For them, the once-thriving electronic equipment factory was a hub for first jobs out of high school. Its parking lot was the perfect bike racing track. Its dumpsters were a gold mine of discarded vacuum parts and funky glassware — all ripe for craft projects.

Improve safety and productivity by addressing employee mental health
Safety.BLR.com
The recent tragic plane crash in the French Alps has brought mental health issues front and center for many employers. While most employees are not in safety-sensitive positions, their psychological state nevertheless has significant impact. Beyond the obvious — the safety and well-being of the individual coworkers — are organizational factors like cost and productivity.

Demolition to begin on old Santee Cooper coal plant in South Carolina
The Post and Courier
A nearly 50-year-old relic of Santee Cooper’s coal-fired, electric-generating history will soon disappear. Demolition work will begin in May on Grainger Generating Station near Conway. The power plant on U.S. Highway 501 was decommissioned in 2012 after providing 166 megawatts since 1966, or enough for about 76,300 homes.

Recent study shows that urban blight is bad for your health
Crain's Cleveland Business
We all know urban blight is ugly and scares away prospective residents and investors. It’s also bad for your health. "Research finds that poorly-kept areas can raise our stress levels and lead to other adverse effects, offering further reasons to invest in inner-city turnarounds," according to Fast Company. "There is increasing evidence to show that our environments do affect our health," says Gina South, a physician in the school of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, who led a recent study looking at two run-down parts of Philadelphia.

Construction starts on shipping container housing
The Detroit News
Ask Leslie Horn where the model unit is for the long-awaited residential development her company is building — the one made entirely of recycled steel shipping containers — and she laughs. "You can't miss it," says Horn, CEO of Three Squared Inc., a commercial, residential and mixed-use property development company. She's right. Construction started recently on a three-story model unit, Trumbull Squared, on the southwest corner of Trumbull and Pine, just north of Interstate 75 in Detroit.

How to ensure your business avoids 'Mobilegeddon'
By Jessica Taylor
Stop me if you've heard this before: "Your website needs to be mobile-friendly." Companies have heard this mantra for years, but now a tangible penalty is in effect, punishing websites that don't render well on smartphones and tablets. It's being called "Mobilegeddon." As of April 21, if your website isn't mobile-friendly, then you will likely be missing out on a lot of traffic. Why? Google shook up the way their search algorithm ranks websites, placing the ones that are mobile-friendly higher in the search from a smartphone or tablet than those sites that aren't.

How data visualization is transforming the construction industry in 2015
Construction Global
Big data is a concept that has impacted all industries, allowing corporations to define their futures more purposefully. The growing ability to process big data has created a period of more intuitive corporate leaders and more effective decision-making. Despite the benefits that big data delivers, data processing at that magnitude isn’t necessary for all organizations. But, the same benefits can be reached by analyzing data on a smaller scale, opening up the opportunity to start seeing the benefits of data insights to small and medium sized companies.
