Benefits of NDA Membership Come Alive Through Active Involvement
NDA
When my brothers Brian and Nick and I took over as co-owners of Hayden Wrecking in Washington Park, IL, we thought the time was right to get more out of our company's long-time membership in the National Demolition Association (NDA). Our grandfather, William Hayden, founded the business in 1945 after returning home from World War II. Our father, Ron, understood the value of partnering with other professionals in the demolition industry and when the NDA was established in 1973, Hayden Wrecking became a founding member.

Study: OSHA underestimated cost of silica rule by $4.5 billion per year
Construction & Demolition Recycling
A new report released by the Construction Industry Safety Coalition has found that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s proposed silica standards for U.S. construction industry will cost the industry $5 billion per year — roughly $4.5 billion per year more than OSHA’s estimates. The coalition cautioned that the flawed cost estimates reflect deeper flaws in the rule and urged the federal agency to reconsider its approach.

New demolition strategy for Indiana towers
WTHI-TV
The demolition site at the Statesman Towers in Terre Haute, Indiana, catches the attention of a lot of people. Frequently you can see bystanders watching, maybe even taking photos. It may be hard to tell right now but essentially the building is made up of two layers. The outside shell and an interior core. Inside that core you have elevators and stairs and other things hard to demolish.

North Carolina Senate panel votes to let counties, towns offer historic preservation grants
The News & Observer
Counties and municipalities could create their own incentive programs for historic preservation under a bill that passed the North Carolina Senate Finance Committee April 28. Senate Bill 472 would allow counties, cities and towns to issue grants or loans — funded by property taxes — to public and private property owners seeking to restore historic buildings. The bill’s sponsor, Republican Sen. Andrew Brock of Mocksville, said some towns have already tried to offer incentives. "The problem is that they wound up in the court system," he said, pointing to lawsuits questions local governments’ authority on incentives.

Building industry betting on pent-up demand to boost activity
By Michael J. Berens
The beginning of 2015 was "deja vu all over again" for the building industry, as severe weather conditions in much of the country once more dampened activity for most of the first quarter. New construction, remodeling and design work all lost some momentum coming off a strong fourth quarter in 2014, although growth remained positive overall compared to a year ago. Nonetheless, building professionals express confidence that improving economic indicators will encourage homeowners to undertake projects they have been putting off for some time.

Best practices for night work
ForConstructionPros.com
It’s no secret that workers on the nightshift have a higher fear for their safety and with good reason; The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 37 percent of work zone fatalities happen at night.
