Commission delays action on demolition of historic buildings as Urban Redevelopment Agency joins fight
The Augusta Chronicle
Two historic buildings on Augusta, Georgia’s city government campus were again spared the wrecking ball after the Augusta Commission voted to consider a code amendment, allowing the city to bypass the historic preservation commission. After a crowd of preservation-minded residents packed the commission chamber in protest, Commissioner Sean Frantom said his motion to refer the matter to a committee ensures "they have a voice" in the decision.

Demolition continues at Candlestick Park

With each passing day, chunks of San Francisco's Candlestick Park fall into a pile of debris. New video of this Bay Area landmark was shot recently. It is quickly becoming more and more unrecognizable. As of May 5, roughly half of the stadium remains standing, while the other half has been reduced to rubble.

Contractors, unions: OSHA confined-space rule will save lives

A long-awaited federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration final rule for working in confined spaces on construction sites has received general support from industry and labor unions, which see the regulation as a positive development that will protect workers. The rule, which OSHA released on May 1 and published in the Federal Register on May 4, establishes new requirements for working safely in confined spaces, such as pits, sewers, crawl spaces and tanks. The rule's requirements take effect on Aug. 3.

Congressional budget calls for cuts to federal funding for transportation

Recently, House and Senate Republicans agreed to a budget framework that would reduce highway and transit funding by 22 percent, which translates to about $12 billion in spending cuts. Of course, the budget can be reworked, but the clear message out of Washington is the federal government wants to spend less on infrastructure.

Panel to decide fate of Indianapolis church facing demolition

An Indianapolis zoning board is set to vote on a proposal that would move a century-old church closer to demolition to make way for a convenience store. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission is scheduled to vote Wednesday on a rezoning request for St. John United Church of Christ on the city’s far east side.
