Registration is Still Open for 2015 Spring Board Meeting

A meeting of the Board of Directors of the National Demolition Association has been scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Grand Hyatt San Francisco. New to the schedule this year, the Committee Strategy Sessions will be held on Friday, June 5. All members are invited to attend.

Demolition begins at former Indianapolis Star building
The Indianapolis Star
The demolition of The Indianapolis Star's former home has begun. Brick crumbled early May 11 at 307 N. Pennsylvania St. as construction crews from TWG Development continued to clear more than 100 years of history to make way for a residential and retail hub called Pulliam Square at the southwest end of Massachusetts Avenue.

Owner asks court to halt East St. Louis landmark demolition

The owner of a historic East St. Louis, Illinois, building that's fallen into disrepair has filed a temporary restraining order seeking to halt the property's demolition by the city. Kimberly Williams, 36, bought the six-story, 106-year-old Murphy Building a decade ago for $700 at a county tax auction but has been unable to complete a planned $7 million retail and residential project in her struggling hometown.

Demolition debris falls, slams onto pickup truck in Portland, Oregon
KGW-TV
Debris fell on a pickup truck parked outside a construction project in southeast Portland, Oregon, but no one was hurt. The truck was parked along Southeast 50th Avenue, near Division Street, when the large amount of wood and other materials came tumbling down on it. No one was inside the vehicle.

Springfield, Massachusetts, to demolish blighted buildings

Associated Building Wreckers of Springfield, Massachusetts, has won the contract to demolish blighted buildings on seven residential and business properties in the city, including two industrial sites on Bay Street. Associated Building Wreckers submitted the low bids on the sites including the former Roy's Towing Used Auto Parts at 876 Bay St., and the former Cohen Bros. Metals Recycling facility at 846 Bay St. The city took ownership of the two sites for nonpayment of taxes. There were also various residential properties.

A collaboration between several groups in Muskegon County, Michigan, proposes to turn a bunch of the county's trash into treasure. The Second Harvest project surrounds the mass demolition of blight homes in Muskegon County and how to put the materials from those homes to re-use. Second Harvest is an initiative spearheaded by a Muskegon County innovation team – grants coordinator Connie Maxim-Sparrow, economic development coordinator Jonathon Wilson and sustainability coordinator Sara Damm.

Stadler installs its first single-stream recycling plant in North America

Spartanburg, South Carolina-based Stadler America LLC has announced its German parent company Stadler Anlagenbau has installed its first single-stream sorting and recycling plant in North America at Hamm Inc. in Lawrence, Kansas. The plant sorts residential single stream material, consisting of paper and old corrugated containers, polyethylene terephthalate, and mixed plastics, glass, ferrous and nonferrous materials. The system has a capacity of 10 metric tons per hour. An extension to a 20 metric tons per hour capacity is planned.
