NDA remembers Charlie L. (Chuck) Clark of Three D Services
NDA
The Association lost a founding member last week. Charlie (Chuck) L. Clark of Three D Service Company, Inc. in Pomona, Calif., died. His memorial service was held this past weekend. Chuck always had the best interests of the demolition industry at heart whether it was on the local, state, national or international level. His support of the NDA and its SoCal Chapter was unflagging. He almost never missed a convention and served on the Board of Directors and several NDA committees over the course of his career. In 2007 he was the recipient of the National Demolition Association's Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor he richly deserved. He will be sorely missed by his friends and colleagues in the industry he helped to shape.

Donations in his honor can be made to:
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
4804 Granite Drive, Suite F-140

New financing tools needed for infrastructure
Politico
There is a growing recognition of America's underinvestment in its infrastructure. Many elements of our most critical systems are aging, deteriorating and severely congested, as evidenced by the D-plus grade that the American Society of Civil Engineers recently gave to the nation's infrastructure. There are continuing calls for investment in infrastructure, even from some outspoken "budget hawks," not only to provide the basis for creating construction and manufacturing jobs, but more importantly to sow the seeds for long-run economic growth and global competitiveness.

Top 10 loss control tips for 2013: Leveraging leading indicators
By Dennis Truitt
Leading indicators are essential to protecting your firm. While lagging indicators certainly have their place sharing our past performance with us, they don't reveal much about what is going on now, or what will happen in the future. For that reason, you should become quite comfortable with pre-use inspections. Checking vehicles, mobile equipment and tools prior to their use can go quite a long way to prevent injury and accidents.

Seattle's $2 billion tunnel project has moved closer to the actual drilling stage, after crews finished the 400-foot pit in which the giant tunnel-boring machine, known as Bertha, is being assembled. "If Bertha is the star of the project, the launch pit is her stage," said Linea Laird, Washington State Department of Transportation administrator for the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program, in a statement. Razing the roof
Construction & Demolition Recycling
About 11 million tons of asphalt shingle waste are generated in the U.S. each year, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The vast majority of that waste — about 90 percent — is construction scrap from roof installations and tear-offs from roof repairs and replacements. Shingle manufacturing scrap accounts for 9 to 10 percent of this material.

Elder Demolition
Radioactive gauges and devices are commonly used in industrial buildings for a variety of purposes. These radioactive tools can measure everything from the thickness of metal to the volume of fluids in bottles and cans.
