Baltimore tears down homes to build up community

Workers recently knocked down five long-vacant houses in northeast Baltimore, part of an effort to draw new residents to an area where tidy brick homes stand next to boarded-up houses. The demolition was the first under a program established by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to address the more than 30,000 vacant homes and lots in the city. Community leaders, who had fought for years to get the city to tear down the vacant houses that have blighted the neighborhood, cheered as the house crumbled. More

AIA Billings Index falls 3 points

A leading index for the architecture and construction industries tumbled three points in April, as uncertainty in the economy continued to loom. The American Institute of Architects said its Architectural Billings Index fell from 50.5 in March to 47.6 in April. A score below 50 reflects a decrease in demand for design services. More

Las Vegas works to improve recycling initiatives

An article in the Las Vegas Weekly newspaper portrays the recent wave of recycling and landfill diversion activity that has occurred along the famous Las Vegas strip of casinos and hotels. An MGM Resorts manager indicates that the chain now recycles 33 percent of the waste or scrap it generates, while the figure for CityCenter properties is 55 percent. Among the materials being diverted are plastic, glass, aluminum, cardboard, cooking oil, uneaten food and unused resources from conventions. More
