The Southern California Chapter of the National Demolition Association will be celebrating its 25th Silver Anniversary Golf Tournament on June 4-5 at the Pacific Palms Resort in City of Industry, Calif. The program includes a cocktail reception and dinner on Wednesday evening followed by the So Cal’s golf tournament on the Pacific Palms beautiful course. NDA Board meets in Vancouver June 6-7

The Board of Directors of the National Demolition Association will be holding its summer Board of Directors meeting at the Pan Pacific Hotel on Vancouver’s beautiful waterfront, June 6-7. Among the items to be discussed will be the 2014/15 fiscal year budget, the progress made on the NDA’s Education Initiative and the recent upgrades to the NDA’s website. NDA President Jeff Kroeker of Fresno, California, encourages all NDA members and potential members to attend this important meeting and participate in the governance of the industry’s association.

Despite signs of economic slowdown, PCA expects construction to grow steadily in next 5 years

Despite data that suggests the economic recovery in the U.S. is slowing down, PCA Chief Economist Ed Sullivan says he still believes construction and cement consumption will steadily grow over the next five years. The economic causes of concern include the fact that real gross domestic product fell during the fourth quarter of 2013 from 4.1 percent to 2.6 percent. In addition, construction activity has slowed, mortgage applications and the housing market in general are stalling and consumer confidence is down, according to a PCA report.

Demolition preparations move forward for new Sacramento, California, arena

Entrances to the east parking structure below the Downtown Plaza in Sacramento, California, are about to be closed off as workers prepare to demolish the building to make way for a new sports arena. Already, the children's play area has been removed from the mall's atrium. Eventually, the area where the atrium sits will become the center of the new home for the Sacramento Kings.

UNTHA launches new line of shredders
Construction & Demolition Recycling
Equipment-maker UNTHA has launched a new line of shredders under the XR name. UNTHA says the XR shredders will target the recycling of household, commercial and bulky materials. The shredders include technology that “achieves minimal operating costs with maximum performance,” says the company, which has its North American headquarters in Hampton, New Hampshire. The XR model features the UNTHA Eco Drive, designed to ensure that up to 50 percent less energy is consumed compared to some other electro-hydraulic drive options.

OSHA launches summer heat safety campaign: Tips to keep outdoor workers safe

Many areas of the country have already experienced temperatures of 90 degrees or more, and it’s not even June. OSHA reminds employers that exposure to heat can cause illness and death. “Water. Rest. Shade” is the name of OSHA’s campaign to protect workers from the ravages of heat. The agency emphasizes that heat illnesses and deaths are preventable and urges employers to establish a heat illness prevention program.

Recycling spurs Federal Green Challenge victory

An office of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, has received the top award in the U.S. EPA Federal Green Challenge, an annual recognition of efforts by federal government agencies to reduce their environmental impacts. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ National Benefits Center earned the 2014 Federal Green Challenge Overall Achievement Award in Solid Waste Recycling, as announced by EPA officials in Washington in late May.

Ohio communities get more time to complete demolition push

Ohio counties now have extra time to demolish and clean up thousands of vacant and nuisance properties after the attorney general’s office extended a deadline to use up demolition grant funds. The Moving Ohio Forward grant money, about $75 million statewide, has already paid for more than 10,000 demolitions since 2012, about 10 percent of the estimated number of abandoned properties statewide.
