NDA Board to discuss education initiative and 2013-14 budget
in Santa Monica, Calif.

The Board of Directors of the National Demolition Association, which is meeting on Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June 8 at the Santa Monica Marriott, will be discussing the development and implementation of the Association's Education Initiative and its annual Association budget for the coming fiscal year. The Board and its various committees are working on a comprehensive program to provide health & safety as well as management training to the industry's workforce. The goal is to improve the professional competency of the Demolition Industry's workers which is part of the NDA's Strategic Plan and Mission Statement.

President Jeff Kroeker and the entire Board of Directors of the NDA encourage all Association members to participate in the development of this exciting new program. Detroit survival depends on speed of destruction

William Pulte says the only way to truly save Detroit and get the housing market functioning properly again is to destroy large swaths of the city as quickly as possible. Pulte, a scion of the family that created PulteGroup Inc., the largest U.S. homebuilder by revenue, has already knocked down 10 blocks on Detroit's Southeast as part of the proposed nonprofit Detroit Blight Authority program.

Spring renews 2013 construction industry forecast

Construction-industry economists brought together for a Reed Construction Data webcast in May revisited 2013 forecasts through the lens of first-quarter results. The various sectors of the construction economy presented a mixed bag of performance in the first quarter of 2013, but the consensus among Bernard Markstein, chief economist with RCD; Kermit Baker, chief economist with the American Institute of Architects; and Ken Simonson, chief economist with the Associated General Contractors, is that the industry continues to grow at about the same pace as in 2012.

Debris removal becomes priority in Moore, Okla.

Cleanup crews fanned out across Moore, Okla., devastated by a massive tornado that killed at least 24 people two days earlier. Initial Oklahoma Insurance Department estimates pegged damage from the storm at $2 billion. The National Weather Service said the EF-5 tornado — with winds exceeding 200 mph — was on the ground for 40 minutes, cutting a 17-mile-long path, 1.3 miles wide.

Connecticut enacts mattress stewardship law

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy signed a bill mandating the creation of a statewide system to manage discarded mattresses. The state is the first in the nation to enact statewide mattress stewardship regulation. The legislation passed the state Senate May 16 and the House of Representatives May 2.

Construction employment in most states down for month, up for year
Construction & Demolition Recycling
Construction employment declined in 32 states and the District of Columbia in April even as 29 states added jobs between April 2012 and April 2013, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of Labor Department data. Association officials note that construction demand in a number of states appears to be slackening amid federal construction spending cuts and relatively weak private sector demand.
