BIR World Recycling Convention: Optimism in the ferrous sector
Construction & Demolition Recycling
Several presenters during the Ferrous Division meeting at the Bureau of International Recycling’s World Recycling Convention offered promising signs of improvement for that sector’s future performance, even as challenges persist. The convention was held June 1-4 at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami. Ferrous Division President Christian Rubach, an executive with Germany's TSR Recycling, summarized global conditions in the ferrous scrap sector as challenging, but said the division had received a number of positive signs in recent weeks.

How the past comes down: Demolition at Brooklyn's Domino Sugar complex

Behind a green construction fence near the Williamsburg, Brooklyn, waterfront, crews are demolishing and gutting 28 buildings from the Domino Sugar Refinery complex, readying it for a $1.5 billion mixed-use development that the city approved in late April. It's a familiar occurrence in space-starved and development-hungry New York: Contractors demolish old buildings to make room for new ones. Yet few New Yorkers know about what's going on around them — the lengthy and expensive process of clearing out hazardous materials before demolition, the salvaging of materials during destruction and the fact that even soil may be removed afterward.

Demolition of Chicago's Ontario Street Bridge to begin

For the remaining weekends in June, Chicago's downtown Loop will be more like a knot for Chicago drivers. That's because the Illinois Department of Transportation is set to begin demolishing the Ontario Street Bridge, causing closures on the Kennedy Expressway and the Ohio Street exit ramp on different weekends for the rest of the month.

Construction industry adds 6,000 jobs in May
Construction & Demolition Recycling
Construction employers added 6,000 workers in May as the industry's unemployment rate dropped to 8.6 percent, its lowest May level in six years, according to an analysis of new government data by the Associated General Contractors of America. However, association officials caution that gains remain spotty and that thousands of highway construction jobs are at risk because of a pending halt in federal transportation funding later this summer.

Sims Recycling Solutions installs new equipment at Illinois plant

The electronics recycling and refining firm Sims Recycling Solutions, with Americas headquarters in Chicago, has installed additional shredding and sampling equipment at its precious metal sampling facility in Franklin Park, Illinois. Sims Recycling Solutions says the facility is the only one in North America it owns that houses a precious metal sampling operations.

Tennessee awards grants to help with historic preservation

History is getting a boost in Tennessee thanks to a number of grants awarded June 9 by the Tennessee Historical Commission. Among the money handed out was $6,000 to Knox Heritage to help pay for the restoration of windows at its new offices located inside the historic Westwood House. The organization moved into its new headquarters two months ago, but there's still work to be done to get the building completely restored.

Estimated tax payments: Your questions answered

Estimated income tax payments are a fact of life for most of us who run our own businesses. Unlike those who are employed and receive paychecks where taxes are withheld by the employer, most business owners and the self-employed will be required to periodically send an amount called "estimated tax payments" to the IRS.
