How Detroit taught itself to demolish vacant houses safely
Next City
"It kind of used to be like the Wild West a few years ago," Regina Royan recalls, thinking back on how buildings were being demolished in Detroit prior to 2014. The old norms, she says, lacked oversight. "We realized that there was really no [fill dirt] testing that went on beforehand," says Brian Farkas of the Detroit Building Authority. "Think about that. We were about to undertake the largest demolition operation probably in the country, if not the world, and there was kind of an honor system on the type of dirt we were putting in the holes. Immediately we were like, ‘That’s not going to fly.’"

5 construction industry firms score FAA exemptions for drones
Construction Dive
Until the FAA publishes rules to govern the use of drones for commercial use — expected within the next two years — it is illegal for companies to fly the unmanned devices without permission from the FAA. Hobbyists, however, are allowed to fly them for fun. Still, it’s possible more contractors will win FAA exemptions. While few construction-related businesses have been granted permission to fly, the FAA has been issuing approximately 20 Section 333 waivers a week.

Home demolition plan angers neighbors in Portland, Oregon
KOIN-TV
Complaints about a rash of home demolitions in Portland, Oregon, got louder June 15, after plans to tear down a home on NE Alameda Street were revealed. Developers are working on plans to demolish a home on the 3400 block of NE Alameda Street and replace it with two new residences. "This is not what I want to bring my son home to," Randy Schiess, who lives nextdoor, said. "We moved here to start a family and that was the main thing we wanted, this setting, a very nice old neighborhood."

Airport terminal demolition in Wichita, Kansas to be split into two projects
The Wichita Eagle
After estimates for the demolition of the old Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita, Kansas, came in higher than expected, the Wichita Airport Advisory Board decided June 16 to split the task into two projects in an effort to lower costs — one funded by federal grant money, and one not. The board met in a hurry to meet a June 26 deadline to accept an $11 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration, which would pay for a portion of the airport’s demolition. In order to take advantage of the federal funds, the board voted unanimously to separate the project into two parts — one funded by FAA, and one not — rather than combining it into one, hiking up the cost.

Demolition of historic 'Bro Bowl' skateboard park in Tampa, Florida begins
The Tampa Tribune
Beeps, honks, and the churn of heavy machinery rumbled through the air as the excavator’s claw dug into the graffiti-covered concrete. Large, blue metal containers sat off to the side, filled with pieces of the city’s history. This is the construction zone at Perry Harvey Sr. Park in downtown Tampa, Florida. It’s been a place where the city has struggled to preserve not only the cultural history of Tampa’s segregation-era business and entertainment industry, but also the history of the city’s Golden Age of skateboarding. This is the site where the "Bro Bowl" is being demolished.
