North Carolina historic preservation tax credit could expire this year
Time Warner Cable News
The fate of a state tax credit that helps communities across North Carolina save historic buildings could be decided soon. State lawmakers haven't agreed on whether to include the historic preservation tax credit in their final budget, and it's due to expire at the end of the year. "I think that would be a terrible mistake for the state to let that happen," said Concord Mayor Scott Padgett.

Mike Rowe on 'PR campaign for hard work'
CNN
Mike Rowe says he didn't consciously seek a cause to support — it found him. For eight seasons and in more than 300 episodes, the host of the Discovery Channel's "Dirty Jobs" met hard-working Americans doing work that no one else would do. But these were all jobs that help make the world go round. The show, inspired by Rowe's grandfather, a plumber, aimed to celebrate the men and women in trade jobs. But in 2008, the TV show host became in demand as a spokesman on employment issues.

Why leaders should hand out compliments, not just criticism
By Christina Nava
Let's face it: No one wants to work under a leader who rebukes more than commends. After a while, it becomes exhausting. The purpose of any criticism in the workplace is to express disapproval. It is to indicate that the work someone has put in isn't as good as it could be. While this negative feedback is meant to bring about improvement in an employee, too much of it often produces damaging effects. As a leader, it's important to be aware that constant criticism has the power to affect an employee's self-esteem.
