NDA Supported Silica Amendment Passes Senate Committee
NDA
The National Demolition Association joined an industry coalition in urging the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee to pass an amendment sponsored by Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND) that addresses the proposed rulemaking to revise the standard on occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica. OSHA has not explained how lowering the permissible exposure limit (PEL) will effectively reduce the number of silica-related illnesses and deaths. Furthermore, OSHA has admitted that it has failed to enforce current standards already in place. On Thursday, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed the amendment by voice vote, which requires a study conducted by the National Academy of Sciences to answer several questions before a rulemaking on PEL alterations can take place.
