Putting a third 'i' in building
By Michael J. Berens
Today's built environments are all about performance — and not just building performance. Yes, they have to deliver on energy and water conservation, improved indoor air quality, reduced waste and more. Increasingly, they also are being asked to influence the behaviors of occupants and to safeguard their health and wellness, as well as their privacy and safety. To succeed, professionals today must practice the three i's: intelligent, integrated and interdisciplinary.

Cleveland to bring new tech tools to the fight against blight
Next City
Last October, Ohio’s Cuyahoga County Council approved a $50 million demolition bond, much of it earmarked for dealing with Cleveland’s condemned homes. "The City of Cleveland is an aged city. Like all cities of our age, we’ve had our periods of growth and periods of decline," says Tom Vanover, chief of the Building and Housing Department. He says a lack of funding has slowed the demolition process. With the new bond, hopefully the city can make a bigger dent in its blight problem. One thing’s for sure: Bureaucracy should be less of an impediment, thanks to the city’s efficient demolition-tracking system from Accela, a cloud-based government software company.

No clear answer on when Pier can come down in St. Petersburg, Florida
Tampa Bay Times
A construction fence rose at the Pier in St. Petersburg, Florida, July 13, signaling that demolition is imminent, starting with the iconic and controversial inverted pyramid. But that work could be weeks, even months away because of what appears to be a misunderstanding about a required federal permit. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says nothing — including planned removal of metals and fixtures from the inverted pyramid — can occur without the agency's permission.

Materials being reused at demolition sites in Meadville, Pennsylvania
The Meadville Tribune
Most of the steel, concrete and glass from two Meadville, Pennsylvania, demolition projects will be recycled or repurposed, with most of the materials staying within the area. As two separate demolition companies dismantle the former Talon properties and the Mill Run parking garage, the companies do not simply dump the leftover materials in a landfill.

Resident of Marion County, Tennessee, worried about debris dumping at bridge demolition site
Chattanooga Times Free Press
A Marion County, Tennessee, resident is worried that rubble she saw being pushed off a barge last week into the Tennessee River during demolition of the old U.S. Highway 41 bridge is polluting the water. Stephanie Mathews' photos appear to show a large excavator sitting on a barge recently with a bucket or jackhammer attachment working beside one of the old bridge's piers. In a couple of the photos, the equipment appears to be knocking debris from the barge into the water.
