Demolition contractors, operators of crushing plants and operators of several types of equipment used in the demolition and recycling process face the challenge of controlling dust. When working at a job site or facility in a residential, commercial or mixed-use neighborhood, the importance of dust control escalates, as the last thing a contractor or subcontractor wishes to deal with are nuisance complaints from neighbors. Reed Construction Data    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Despite the recent pattern of subpar growth in the United States, persisting uncertainty about the impact of the European sovereign debt crisis on global financial markets and the impact of supply chain disruptions midway through the year, the outlook for the Canadian economy in general, and for commercial construction in particular, remains positive. More significantly, the Business Outlook Survey reported that a record 53 percent of firms reported that they are planning to hire additional staff over the next 21 months. More

When does it pay to use innovative concrete products?
Engineering News-Record    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
New materials and methods available to concrete construction crews in the past decade present a financial dilemma: A flashy material may offer advantages despite its upfront cost, but how do you know you aren't sending your overall project into the red? A research team took a stab at this problem and found overall cost savings. High-strength rebar generally wins out over traditional steel reinforcement, the study shows. More

The saving of Ground Zero
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
To the degree that it's possible for a 102-story building to take a city by surprise, One World Trade Center snuck up on the New York skyline. For years the project, conceived in the throes of tragedy, has been debated, negotiated, re-named, re-drawn, hailed as a beacon and maligned as a boondoggle. It wasn't until recently, though, that it presented itself as an immutable fact, beginning to replace the void above Ground Zero with steel and reflective glass. Designed to commemorate lost life and recapture lost revenue, the half-completed skyscraper is both a nationalistic statement — it was formerly known as the "Freedom Tower" — and the centerpiece of a speculative real estate project. NDA changes exhibitor contract for San Antonio
NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The NDA's 39th Annual Convention scheduled for March 11–14 at the Gonzalez Convention Center on the Riverwalk in San Antonio will be the first time that NDA has held an annual convention in Texas and the first time the association has utilized a convention center. Changes to the NDA's exhibitor contract involve enlarging the size of exhibit booth size from 8 x 10 to the "industry standard" 10 x 10 size. This will mean an increase in exhibitor space for those companies in the NDA's equipment area as well as its standard booth area. Fees for exhibiting at the NDA's 39th Annual Convention have increased slightly, for the first time in a number of years, but the actual square footage price with the increase in booth-space size will go down from prior conventions. The exhibitor contract will be sent to every Associate member and previous exhibitors at an NDA convention shortly. More

High-performance equipment from aggregate, construction and recycling equipment manufacturers KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens played an important role in recent flood relief efforts during an extensive sandbagging operation in Dakota Dunes, S.D. The South Dakota National Guard used a Series 271 Screening Plant, which was engineered and manufactured at KPI-JCI in Yankton, S.D., to fill sandbags that were carried by a UH60 Blackhawk helicopter in an attempt to raise and reinforce levees along the Missouri River.
