OSHA directive explains new process to assist resolution of whistleblower complaints

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued policies and procedures for applying a new process for resolving whistleblower disputes. The new early resolution process is to be used as part of a regional Alternative Dispute Resolution program. The ADR program offers whistleblower parties the opportunity to negotiate a settlement with the assistance of a neutral, confidential OSHA representative who has subject-matter expertise in whistleblower investigations.

Georgia National Guard being deployed to Atlanta's war on blight

Walls should start tumbling down as law enforcement authorities launch the next phase of their efforts to disrupt the drug market in Atlanta’s English Avenue neighborhood. The campaign is drawing heavyweights: U.S. Attorney John Horn, Atlanta Police Chief George Turner, Fulton District Attorney Paul Howard and Brig. Gen. Joe Jarrad, adjutant general of the Georgia Department of Defense. Then the Georgia National Guard Counterdrug Task Force will immediately begin demolishing blighted properties.

Gary, Indiana, awards $1.2 million for demolition projects

Gary, Indiana's Redevelopment Commission awarded has awarded contracts to six companies totaling more than $1.2 million to handle the demolition of structures on 161 properties scattered across the city. All of the properties were acquired by the city in July through the Hardest Hit Fund Blight Elimination Program, in which property owners turned over the land to the city, with the Redevelopment Commission assuming the legal and financial responsibility of demolishing the existing structures to clear the plots of land for potential future development.

Total US nonresidential construction starts drop nearly 28 percent in July

According to CMD, July’s level of total construction starts in the U.S., excluding residential work, was $22.4 billion, a drop of 27.7 percent compared to June. The major retreat was more noteworthy given CMD’s long-term June-to-July percentage change, due to seasonality, of 3.5 percent. It’s worth noting, however, that the June-to-July shift last year was also weak, down 19.8 percent.

Demolition of former biomedical research building to impact Denver traffic, neighborhood

Crews are preparing for the demolition of a big building on the former CU Hospital Complex later in August that will impact traffic and a neighborhood in Denver. The former Biomedical Research Building at 9th and Colorado will be demolished on Aug. 29 at 8 a.m. "Standard demolition of this building would take more than four months and require ongoing lane closures and disruption to the surrounding area," said Continuum Partners Development Director Frank Cannon in a statement.
