The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As officials across the Washington region continued to assess the damage from a 5.8-magnitude earthquake, structural engineers warned that the full effect of the quake might not be known for days. While the area seems to have fared relatively well, the earthquake packed a punch. Across the region, walls cracked and chunks of concrete broke off buildings. But thanks to improvements in building design and codes that require reinforcements that help buildings stay upright when the ground starts rumbling, the damage was minimized. More

The rapid rise of India's steel industry
IndustryWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The traffic leaving the Kolkata airport in India moves in a type of organized chaos that's incomprehensible to Westerners but clearly understood by the local road warriors who communicate with the beep of a horn. These bumpy roads leading toward Kolkata's business center help tell the story of a nation struggling to enter the industrialized world. Indeed, the sights and sounds of new construction are ever present along JBS Haldane Avenue near the city's sprawling Science City technology and science museum. One of the key sectors supplying these developments is the steel industry. India's government expects the country to become the second-largest crude-steel producer in the world by 2015 More

NDA changes exhibitor contract for San Antonio
NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The NDA's 39th Annual Convention scheduled for March 11–14 at the Gonzalez Convention Center on the Riverwalk in San Antonio will be the first time that NDA has held an annual convention in Texas and the first time the association has utilized a convention center. Changes to the NDA's exhibitor contract involve enlarging the size of exhibit booth size from 8 x 10 to the "industry standard" 10 x 10 size. This will mean an increase in exhibitor space for those companies in the NDA's equipment area as well as its standard booth area. Fees for exhibiting at the NDA's 39th Annual Convention have increased slightly, for the first time in a number of years, but the actual square footage price with the increase in booth-space size will go down from prior conventions. The exhibitor contract will be sent to every Associate member and previous exhibitors at an NDA convention shortly. More

Clear evidence of this was the East Coast earthquake that occurred Aug. 23, which produced more than 40,000 earthquake-related tweets on Twitter, was discussed in more than 3 million Facebook accounts and caused Twitter to hit 5,000 tweets per second.
