California breaks ground on first new high-speed rail station in US

Federal, state and local officials gathered to officially break ground on the Transbay Transit Center - the northern terminus for the California High Speed Rail system and a multi-modal facility that will accommodate 11 transit operators and serve more than 45 million passengers a year. The project is estimated to create more than 48,000 jobs in its first phase of construction, which will last seven years. More

The Board of Control approved demolition and related asbestos-abatement contracts totaling more than $350,000 to take down dilapidated residential properties throughout Youngstown, Ohio. The demolitions, which are being performed by several contractors, are being paid for with Neighborhood Stabilization Program money, said Bill D'Avignon, city community development director. More

The value of construction equipment exported from the U.S. stood at $7.4 billion for the first six months of the year, a +15 percent increase on the same period last year. The figures were released by the U.S.-based Association of Equipment Manufacturers and are based on its own data, along with U.S. Commerce Department figures and other sources. More

The city acquired that abandoned industrial site in 2002 and has been planning to convert the property, deemed an industrial brownfield by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, into a public park. August ferrous scrap prices largely hold steady

Scrap dealers and traders selling to steel mills on the spot market in early August fetched a few dollars per ton more for shredded and number one heavy melting steel scrap, but not for prompt industrial grades. Prices in the August buying period rose most sharply for shredded scrap in the south, where mills, on average, paid $346 per ton for shredded scrap, up from $316 in the July buying period. More
