NDA to survey Regular Members about education initiative
NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Education Committee of the board of directors of the NDA is sending an important survey to every Regular Member of the association concerning its proposed Education Initiative. The survey, being conducted by Association Headquarters, Inc. of Mt. Laurel, N.J., will solicit information concerning the courses and programs that the Education Committee should consider offering as part of this comprehensive initiative. The survey will be sent to every Regular Member via U.S. Mail with a stamped self-addressed return envelop and electronically via email.

The results of the survey will be reported to the NDA's board of directors at its upcoming Fall Board Meeting in New York City on Sept. 29. In order to develop the programs and delivery systems that suit the needs of the demolition industry, the board and its Education Committee needs to get as much information as possible from its major market, its Regular Members. The survey results will guide the board as it develops a major new member service to help its members train their workforce and grow their companies.

As an added incentive and to express its thanks for responding to the survey each responding firm will automatically be entered to win a $500 American Express Gift Card (two winners will be drawn); and an iPad2 (one winner will be drawn; or, the grand prize: FREE DELEGATE REGISTRATION to the NDA's 40th Anniversary Convention in San Diego, March 23–26, 2013, a $700 value!

The board of directors needs its Regular Members to provide it with input about how its Education Initiative should proceed. Please respond to the survey from Association Headquarters by Aug. 31.

2013 Environmental Excellence Awards applications available
NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Applications for the NDA's 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards will be mailed out to every association member early in July. This program, designed to promote the demolition industry's commitment to environmental stewardship as outlined in the organization's mission, has been very successful with both members and their clients. These awards are presented to NDA members that perform projects that have a significant impact on the quality of life in the community where they did the work or developed a product or service that does the same.

This year's awards will be presented by Environment Committee Chairman Chris Godek of New England Yankee Construction of Milford, Conn., March 25, immediately following President Don Rachel's welcoming address at the NDA's 40th Anniversary Convention at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel in San Diego. Award winners receive two awards, one for their own firm and one to present to the client they did the work for. The NDA's Environment Committee established this program to enlighten our customers, the construction community and the general public to the major role the industry plays in enhancing the quality of life in the towns and cities where we work. Look for the 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards application forms soon. The applications will also be available online on NDA's website.

First, Bloomberg mentioned the Brownfield Cleanup Program, which he established in January 2011 to reclaim formerly polluted sites. The program has 30 sites under construction or completed, and another 45 enrolled. "Even if they had no role in polluting the areas in the first place," Bloomberg said. "That's changing. We are making reclaiming these sites a real priority." More

Canada chooses to go green during construction boom
The Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The belief that the planet can supply an infinite amount of natural resources is gone, and the largesse of the '60s has been replaced by a more prudent stinginess. Despite that, the Canadian areas of Quebec and Montreal are undergoing one of the largest construction booms in their history. Which raises the question: If it's not going into island-building, where does all the refuse generated by tearing down and replacing highway interchanges and demolishing old buildings go? The good news is the majority of waste generated through construction, renovation and demolition is being recycled or reused. More

Don't let waste go to waste
Sustainable Business Forum    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. It sounds simple. It's not. Just ask Bill Caesar, who runs the recycling and organic growth units of Waste Management, America's biggest trash company, which has $13.3 billion in revenues last year. It's hard to get many cities and towns to embrace recycling. It's expensive to build out the infrastructure needed to separate materials and ship them to customers. And now, to make matters worse, the prices that buyers are willing to pay for cardboard, used paper, metals and plastics have fallen, on average, by about a third. More
