History-making effort to restore Elwha River takes a big step forward

A history-making and much debated project to restore the Elwha River on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state has taken a big step forward. A contract has been awarded to remove the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams in an ambitious, and expensive, effort to reverse decades of environmental damage to an important river system. A major milestone in that process was reached when a $26.9 million contract was awarded for demolition of both dams. More

New York's 15 Penn Plaza approved

New York City Council has approved a controversial 67-story tower just two blocks from the city's iconic Empire State Building. Despite objections, the council approved plans by Vornado Realty Trust to construct the 363 meter-high, Pelli Clarke Pelli-designed 15 Penn Plaza by 47 votes to 1. Described by the developer as "an outstanding addition to New York's skyline", 15 Penn Plaza will be just 18 meters shorter than the Empire State Building, which has stood in midtown Manhattan since 1931. Lumber, metals and gypsum lead July construction materials price decline

The economic slowdown caused the second consecutive decline in the construction materials price index with a 1.1 percent fall in July. The largest declines were for steel, copper, lumber and gypsum products. Most construction items experienced price declines in July. Weaker pricing, however, did not reach some lumber, energy and metal products by the survey week. More

ARTBA urges EPA not to classify coal ash as 'hazardous' material

A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposal to regulate coal ash as a "hazardous waste" could make concrete more expensive and less durable, thus increasing the costs and environmental footprint of key transportation improvement projects, according to Nick Goldstein, vice president of environmental and regulatory affairs for the American Road & Transportation Builders Association.
