The Vancouver Sun    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Four Canadian postsecondary institutions have recently earned national accreditation for their environmental programs through the country's certifying body, giving graduates national portability and industry recognition with their diplomas. Calgary's SAIT Polytechnic, along with the University of Manitoba, Cegep de St. Felicien in Quebec and Nova Scotia's Community College, now joins the ranks of six other institutions that have met rigorous accreditation standards. Graduates can work in any environmental area in jobs related to water, land and soil, waste management, air and vegetation. More

Built in a dirty boom, China's biggest city tries to go green
ClimateWire via The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Wandering around in downtown Chongqing, China, it is hard to imagine that this is a city that is going green. After living with acid rain and toxic smog for decades, the city has been scrambling for ways to clean up the air. It is also overhauling its power-hungry economy and rebuilding it on a base of industries that use less energy. Chongqing is one of several pilot provinces and cities that Chinese leaders picked last year in an attempt to find a low-carbon growth model that can be spread to the rest of the nation. More

The Convention Committee of the NDA is completing work on the program for the association's 39th Annual Convention at the Hyatt Regency on the Riverwalk in San Antonio, which is planned for March 11–14. This year's show will feature a real Texas rodeo at the Monday Night Theme Party, which will include a PBR bull riding, two country western bands, line dancing, armadillo racing and a mechanical bull to ride. A Texas barbeque will be served. Next year's NDA golf tournament will be held March 11 at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort outside San Antonio. The Convention Committee is considering a demolition rodeo at next year's show, similar to those events held by the solid waste industry, to test the skills of the demolition industry's operators. A number of skill test events will be held in the Gonzalez Convention Center attached to the Hyatt Regency on March 12 in the NDA's exhibit hall. Look for more information about the NDA's 39th Annual Convention shortly.

Tornado construction bolsters an industry's recovery
The Anniston Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Driving on roads through the tornado-torn strip of northwest Calhoun County, Ala., yields scenes of contrast. Acres of trees twisted and broken by the tornadoes stand near wide expanses of freshly leveled ground, smooth and cleared of the storm's refuse. Life isn't back to normal for residents there, but the view is becoming more tolerable to some as new homes crop up to replace the rubble. Built with insurance money and government–secured loans, the emerging residences are also providing jobs to one of the most economically depressed industries in the country — construction. More

NDA changes exhibitor contract for San Antonio
NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The NDA's 39th Annual Convention scheduled for March 11–14 at the Gonzalez Convention Center on the Riverwalk in San Antonio will be the first time that NDA has held an annual convention in Texas and the first time the association has utilized a convention center. Changes to the NDA's exhibitor contract involve enlarging the size of exhibit booth size from 8 x 10 to the "industry standard" 10 x 10 size. This will mean an increase in exhibitor space for those companies in the NDA's equipment area as well as its standard booth area. Fees for exhibiting at the NDA's 39th Annual Convention have increased slightly, for the first time in a number of years, but the actual square footage price with the increase in booth-space size will go down from prior conventions. The exhibitor contract will be sent to every Associate member and previous exhibitors at an NDA convention shortly. More

The development of self-healing materials has surged forward as scientists have taken inspiration from biological systems. Researchers at the University of Illinois in the U.S. have found a way to pump healing fluids around a material like the circulation of animal's blood. Materials that could repair themselves as they crack would have uses in civil engineering and construction. More

The 3 questions that lead to profitable growth
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
Self-awareness is not always pretty. We go to some lengths to avoid it, tucking our stomachs in as we pass a mirror, weighing ourselves at the most favorable times and favoring people who compliment us. No real harm done. However, when management teams do the same in their businesses, great harm can occur, for self-awareness is the first building block of successful growth strategies. More
