Data needed to support lead-based paint issue in excavator cabs
NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When the NDA presented its High Reach Demolition Machine Guidance Document, developed in concert with the National Federation of Demolition Contractors in the U.K., to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for review at a Sept. 9, meeting in Washington, D.C., one of the issues discussed was whether OSHA's personal protection rules for lead-based paint (29 CFR 1926.62) should be enforced for operators of the industry's excavators involved with shearing lead-containing structural steel. Specifically, the NDA has requested a "Letter of Interpretation" from OSHA to clarify whether operators need to be wearing all the personal protective equipment when working in an enclosed cab cutting lead-based paint (LBP)-containing structural steel.

OSHA is interested in evaluating air monitoring data from shearing operations that would validate the NDA's contention that there is little chance for exposure when cutting LBP-containing structural steel. Your Association will be collecting this data and needs members to provide air monitoring and bulk sample data for lead results on projects where cutting of structural steel is taking place. This is an important research effort that will benefit the entire demolition industry. For more specific information about this effort, call 1.800.541.2412.

ASPA announces 'How to Champion Disaster's First 72 Hours' webinar
NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The American Society for Public Administration, which the NDA is a member of, is sponsoring a webinar entitled "How to Champion Disaster's First 72 Hours" which will focus on public perceptions of public safety and utility service organizations' ability to provide essential services within the first three days of a disaster. This webinar will also address how contingency plans underestimate the issue of responders as victims, and what those organizations can do to prepare an immediate and sustained response following a disaster. As many NDA members provide second response services in times of disaster this webinar could prove very useful as a learning tool for those companies involved with disaster response and urban search and rescue operations. For more information go to www.aspanet.org or call the NDA at 1.800.541.2412.
