New York recommends 22 properties for historic preservation

New York state is recommending 22 properties to the state and National Registers of Historic Places. The properties include ones in Chemung, Ulster, Putnam, and Monroe counties. "These nominations highlight the diverse forces that have shaped New York's history," said Rose Harvey, commissioner of the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, in a statement.

Minneapolis looks at rules for recycling demolition, construction waste

Booming development in Minneapolis and across the Twin Cities has come with a largely hidden price: tons of demolition and construction waste being sent to landfills. State pollution regulators estimate that construction sites in Minnesota generate roughly the same amount of landfill material as traditional municipal waste does every year. A burgeoning industry has sprung up in recent years to recycle or resell that debris, but local policymakers are now eyeing regulations to help capture even more of it.

Manufacturing plant construction boom creating jobs

Spending on construction or renovation of factories is up 12 percent in 2014 compared to being virtually flat in 2013, according to Census Bureau figures and a recent article from USA Today. That 12.6 percent surge in spending on nonresidential structures was a big reason for the upward revision of second quarter economic growth. The Commerce Department said the economy expanded at a 4.6 percent annual rate, up from its previous 4.2 percent estimate and the strongest growth in 2.5 years.

OSHA and National Safety Council renew alliance
Construction & Demolition Recycling
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and National Safety Council have renewed their alliance to work together to protect the health and safety of workers and understand the rights of workers and responsibilities of employers under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Assistant Secretary of Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels announced the alliance renewal at National Safety Council Congress & Expo in San Diego.

Chicago issues demolition permit for Wrigley Field bleachers

The city of Chicago's Department of Buildings issued a demolition permit recently for the removal of outfield bleacher sections at Wrigley Field, a city spokesman said. Cubs spokesman Julian Green said that bleacher renovations will start soon. The left-field and right-field bleachers will be demolished and rebuilt as part of a $375 million stadium renovation plan. An additional $200 million in upgrades are planned for the surrounding area.

Post-Sandy historic preservation grants awarded in Maryland

Six historic preservation projects in Somerset County are among several in Maryland that have been awarded federal disaster relief grant funds following Hurricane Sandy. The $1.4 million in grant funds awarded to Maryland come from the National Park Service, which awarded more than $7.6 million from the Historic Preservation Fund to eight East Coast states to help stabilize or repair historic properties damaged by Hurricane Sandy, according to the Maryland Historical Trust.

Tokyo's 'futuristic' 1970s Capsule Tower threatened with demolition

The Nakagin Capsule Tower is one of Tokyo's most famous buildings. Designed by Kisho Kurokawa in 1972, it caught the world's attention with its minuscule living spaces for the country's single office workers. The striking tower, in Tokyo's Shimbashi district, even appeared as a Japanese hotel in 2013 blockbuster "The Wolverine."
