WPL Publishing to host comprehensive course on successfully managing claims and change orders in construction

The 16-part webinar series, spanning from Oct. 15 through April 15, 2015, is well suited for a wide variety of professionals within the construction community, including owners, subcontractors, contract administrators, construction managers, architects, engineers, project managers, project engineers and project superintendents. The course has been approved for 24 American Institute of Architects learning units. Attendance certificates will be provided for state continuing education requirements as well as MCLEs.

Demolition of Vegas' never-opened Harmon Hotel to begin in 2 weeks

Demolition of the Harmon, a 26-story Las Vegas hotel that was supposed to be one of the gems of the CityCenter mega-development, is set to begin soon. The Harmon was part of the $8.5 billion CityCenter, a glitzy hotel, retail and restaurant complex on the Las Vegas Strip that opened in December 2009. But the Harmon, with its striking blue glass exterior, never opened, the victim of construction issues.

Ohio historic preservation tax credit round comes with high stakes

More competition, higher stakes. That describes the latest round of applications for Ohio historic preservation tax credits after the state’s deadline for them Sept. 30. Nathaniel Kaelin, manager for the state historic preservation credit program, said, "This is the most competitive round we’ve had to date, both in the number of applications and dollar amounts requested."

Demolition starts in Boca Raton, Florida, to make way for apartment building

Even before the first shovelful of dirt was turned, a 900-foot-long, nine-story project along Boca Raton, Florida's main thoroughfare had spawned two lawsuits, one judicial appeal and even a new state law. But Oct. 5, the residential complex came closer to reality when two excavators flattened law offices and a strip of stores. It's all to make way for Palmetto Promenade, formerly known Archstone Palmetto Park — 378 rental apartments situated near the southeast corner of Northeast Third Avenue and Palmetto Park.

Construction industry adds 16,000 jobs in September
Construction Equipment
Construction employers added 16,000 jobs and the sector's unemployment rate fell to 7 percent in September, according to an analysis of federal data by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said the construction employment gains come as more firms report having a hard time finding enough qualified workers to fill available positions, citing the lack of local vocational training programs, especially at the secondary level.

Low-cost building skin cools while using no energy

Imagine a building that self-regulates its temperature without electronics. A building that adapts, allowing outside air in as needed and eliminating the need for air conditioning, but that uses no energy in doing so. A University of California, Berkeley research team has developed a new type of "building skin" that can do just that, and they are offering their skin as a low-cost option specifically for developing countries.
